wireless help for a novice!

Hi everyone,
just bought a lap top today, this house has wireless internet but i cant connect. I have gone to the connect to interenet screen and it gives me two options - broadband (pppop) or dial uip, but no wireless options. Also when you look at device manager it says i have a ethanet connection but no wireless, even though the spec says the lap top is wireless.
can anyone help? and on very basic levels as well :)

Check the BIOS and see if the wireless adapter is disabled. Also, the exact make/model of the machine would be a big help here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
