Direct Download Question

Hi, I've always wondered, why when i start an http download the speed will quickly work its way up to about 1mb/s, then slowly drop down to somewhere between 50-100kb/s and remain there for the rest of the dl? If it it helps, my connection speed is 9mb down 3mb up when i test it at various speedtest sites.

I don't know why it should drop that low, my 15mbit connection will do around 1.8mbyte/sec from a fast site all the way to the end. Is this a wired or wireless connection?

It seems to depend on the site, but even on fast sites it will slowly drop from 1mb to 5-600 by the end of the download. As far as wired/wireless, it's wired at my house, but its a wireless connection to a radio tower a few miles from my house.

Well, typically the estimates sometimes start at the high end, then slow down as the history is accumulated and the calculation has more precision. You could also have some packet loss, perhaps a test is in order.


Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
