Networking wireless and non wireless

Hi all,

I have little to no knowledge in this area. Have a question for you. Maybe you can help.

I have a laptop with wireless capability but my desktop hasn't and is connected via a cable to a router which has wireless capabilities. The laptop uses a wireless connection to the router.

Is there a way to network so I can share files between pc and laptop?

Would I get a wireless adapter of some sort for the pc? Since we are both using the same router is there a way to use the router to share files?

This all probibly sounds dumb but as I say I have never looked into this end of things.

If its of any use I have a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.

The desktop has xp pro and laptop is Vista Home edition.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Networking wireless and non wireless

Not dumb at all! You can indeed setup file and printer sharing on both the laptop and the PC. In fact the network settings should already be setup, so go ahead and share a folder on the laptop and see if you can access it on the PC.

Re: Networking wireless and non wireless

Hi and thanks for reply.

I have shared a folder on the laptop but I cannot access this folder from the pc.

i have looked through some of the network settings and i'm unsure of what to select.

as I said above I have:-

1 Pc not wireless connected to router via cable running xp Pro.
1 laptop wireless connected to same router wirelessly. Vista Home edition

I have been able to access the router settings via wireless laptop but that as far as I am able.

Any help much appreciated.

Re: Networking wireless and non wireless

The network settings are automatically given to the PC and laptop by the router itself. Have you tried to browse to the shared folder via network neighbourhood?

Re: Networking wireless and non wireless

Let's see this for each of the two computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Networking wireless and non wireless

Hi JohnWill,

Had a brainwave after your post. Originally, I installed Windows vista on my desktop but for reasons that don't matter here, I created a partition and reinstalled Xp. I didnt bother reparing the Vista boot log so Vista has been hidden since i instaled Xp.

My thought was that maybe Vista had a connection to the Laptop so I fixed the boot and I enabled sharing on the desktop in Vista. When I did that the Laptop showed up in my network folder.

However I cant access the laptop folders as it wants a username a password. I tried the laptops username and password but it didnt work andy ideas?

Anyway, I really want this to work on Xp as I only use that OS. I have attached the info you requested. I have also included the info from the Vista CMD prompt for comparison.

Re: Networking wireless and non wireless

Can you ping the desktop from the laptop?
I use xp on desktop and vista on laptop too, and the desktop won't show up either at network neighborhood
But if you enter the name or ip address manually you can access the xp with no problem.

don't forget to enable the file sharing on the vista
