can connect to network but not internet
i have a question. today i just bought a wireless adapter for my desktop its the D-Link dwa-142 rangebooster N usb adapter. i currently have a netgear super g router (108mbps) in my house and my laptop runs great on it. when i bought the adapter today i installed the drivers just like it said. however heres the problem, it lets me connect to my network at home however it wont let me connect to the internet. oh btw i have vista.
this is what it looks like in network and sharing http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...andsharpic.jpg im guessing that it is some sort of setting or ip problem with vista cause my laptop (xp) can connect fine and my desktop is connecting to the network, but not the internet. its saying that im connected to "unidentified network (windwifi)" which is my network and it says that i have limited connectivity even though i have 4 bars. anybody have any ideas what it could be? thanks |

Re: can connect to network but not internet
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: can connect to network but not internet
You are not connected to the router. My top suspect would be encryption keys. I'd disable encryption on the router totally and see if you can connect. Also, turn off any MAC filtering on the router.

Re: can connect to network but not internet
You are not connected to anything right now, which is why you have the 169.254.x.x IP address.
Connect with a cable and see if you can get that working first. You change the encryption and MAC filtering in the router's wireless setup screens, which obviously depends on the exact make/model of the router.

Re: can connect to network but not internet
ok i disabled the encryption but was unable to find anything about mac filtering in my router settings. however, by disabling encryption i was able to connect to the internet. is there anything that i can do inorder to have encryption set to on so my network is secure and still be able to connect?

Re: can connect to network but not internet
Try setting the encryption again in the router
Delete the current wifi connection from the desktop and start over again create the connection, ssid, encryption, etc etc Reconnect again |

Re: can connect to network but not internet
okay I've never used an N adapter and connect to G router, it supposedly fine, if your connection worked fine before you plug the adapter then maybe the problem is with the adapter.

Re: can connect to network but not internet
well like i said before, i can connect when the encryption is off but not when its on. so i dont think its the adapter since i can connect. i could just leave the encryption off but i dont want just anybody connecting to my network. so i need to figure out what the problem is; however, i don't know a thing about networking
