[SOLVED] One PC can connect to Net, but other can't
Hi,
I am not able to connect to the Net with my laptop all of a sudden. I usually connect via wireless. The other two laptops in my home have no problems connecting. I have tried: - Surfing the web using my browsers (IE, FF) - connecting to my email using my email clients (Thunderbird, Outlook) - accessing my FTP site via WS-FTP. - enabling and disabling the wireless connection on my laptop. - connecting to my router using a LAN cable - rebooting (many times) - uninstalling the last software I installed (even tho the connection was fine for a week after I installed it). - running AdAware to flush out any malware All don't work. BUT, if I: - ping my router 192.168.1.1 - ping google.com Both give a response! My router is D-Link DSL-G604T, OS is Windows XP Pro and laptop is Dell Inspiron 6400. Can anyone suggest what could be the problem? I've never faced this kind of problem in the 2 years I've been using my laptop. Thanks. |

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine. Let's see this after the reboot. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: One PC can connect to Net, but other can't
Try these simple tests.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: One PC can connect to Net, but other can't
Lazarus - Yes I followed John's instructions to the letter.
John, here's my result. As mentioned earlier, I have no trouble pinging. It is when I try to access the Net using my email client or browser (or any other software like my FTP client) that it fails. Re: One PC can connect to Net, but other can't
Check your firewalls. Switch off windows firewall and if you have any other security software with firewalls then uninstall the to make sure they are not interfering.

Re: One PC can connect to Net, but other can't
Yep, that machine is connected to the Internet, so we'll need the exact symptoms of what doesn't work now.

Re: One PC can connect to Net, but other can't
Lazareth - you were right. It was my Zone Alarm that was causing it. I didn't suspect it because I've had it installed for over 2 years without it ever being the cause of my Net downtime.
Thanks to both you and John for your help. |
