Please help in configuring LAN cards to access internet..
Can anybody help regarding this issue.. Well we have taken lease line connection for internet and BSNL gave these Usable WAN IP address range - 210.212.109.66 to 70 (total - 210.212.109.64-71)with a subnet of 255.255.255.248 DNS address - 218.248.240.135 Gateway - 61.0.192.133 We set these addresses on the router IP - 210.212.109.66 (on fast ethernet)accordingly with given DNS and Gateway, it is working fine PC's are connected to Switch (24 port - unmanaged) which in turn is connected to the Router On PC's (all using XP sp2) we set the given addresses as For Four PC's IP - 210.212.109.67 to 70 DNS address - 218.248.240.135 Default Gateway - 210.212.109.66 Internet is working fine on all the PC's But, the question is that, If we want to add 4-8 or more than that no. of PC's how to connect them also so that they can also use the internet.. Can we do this by adding one more LAN card to one of the PC and make this as a server (initially there is no server or PC as a server). If so, then how And What IP addresses (plus DNS and gateway) i have to assign to 1st LAN card and what to the 2nd LAN card. What IP address (plus DNS and gateway) should I assign to additional PC's. Is there any other procedure also to use. If yes, then please do tell me about that also. Please help me out giving details. Thanks in advance |

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
what make and model of router do you have running? The WAN IP address on the fast ethernet post of your router looks fine. What you then need to do is give your PCs internal network addresses. (192.168.1.x) Your router will then route between the LAN and WAn for internet. It would also save you leasing out all those WAN addresses which cost money.

Thanks for your suggestion. We are using Cisco 1841 Router.
Ok, if i follow to give internal addresses as per your suggestion, then please do tell me what IP addresses, DNS server address and Default Gateway i have to assign to all the 10-20 PC's. And what configuration should i made to router ( with commands) to access the internet (how can i route those internal addresses with 192.168.1.x series). Initially we have just set up the very basic configuration with required IP and DNS and Default Gateway Addresses.. Please help us Quote:

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Ok if it's a Cisco router running then you can set it up as a DHCP server for the port that the switch is connect to. This will automatically configure the PC's with IP addresses when they are switched on. This also helps if you want to add anymore computers in the future.
Do you have experince in configuring the Cisco router? If not then just shout and I'll help you out.

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Once again thanks for your prompt reply. It's amazed to hear you instantly..
Well, I really don't have any such experience in configuring it.. Please do help me out regarding it's configuration step-by-step (if possible), so as to access internet using private IP addresses 192.168.1.x.. series.. Please do tell me the required configuration using those IP's, DNS's, Gateways addresses which i have given in my first post of this thread. Please assign those addresses only in your examples.. Is it that, NATting should come here.. If so, then also please do tell me how to do that.. Also do tell me if i have to make any additional changes for that too.. If you can help me via e-mail, it would be much better (my e-mail ID: anish_annu@rediffmail.com), but if not possible then also it's OK. Waiting for your prompt reply Thanks Quote:

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Hmm there's a lot to configure here especially on the Cisco router. Lets start light and easy. How many ethernet ports are on the back of the Cisco router? which port is the WAN and LAN switch plugged into? (fa01,fa02?) A picture of the back with connections would be good. Also do you have a rollover cable with a COM adapter to connect a PC/laptop to the router so you can configure it?

Cisco Modular Router 1841 has 2 Fast Ethernet ports, 2 Wan Interface slot, 1 Console port and 1 Auxiliary port.
(Sorry, I could not provide you the diagram but I am attaching the screenshot for 1841, hope you will get that) We have installed WIC 2T card on one of the 1st interface slot and attached to RAD’s Modem ASMi 52 (with V.35 interface) through smart serial cable (V.35) We have connected one 24 port unmanaged switch to one of the Router’s fast Ethernet port (fa 0/0). We have rolled over cable that shipped with Router and a PC with COM port, so as to configure it. As stated earlier, in my first post, We have given WAN IP on fa 0/0 interface, i.e., 210.212.109.66 For further details of please do check my first post of this thread.. Now currently we have 15-20 PC’s (and may increase in future)that are connected to unmanaged which in turn is connected to 1841 router on fast Ethernet port. And we want to share internet connection between all these PC's (Earlier we were using only four PC's) Now please do help me.. Waiting.. Quote:

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Hmm. definetly a lot to be done there. Best thing to do I would think is to get someone with Cisco experience in to configure the router as this would be better doen in person than over email or a forum which makes troubleshooting a mission and a half! What I've done for you though is drawn up a network diagram of the pruposed design with the internal network. You can show this to the Cisco man when he appears and he'll know what to do
Please get back to us with how this goes. I would really like to help further but there are so many commands to setup the Cisco router that it's just impossible to write up! (That's why there's so much stuff to learn in CCNA lol) Any more questions please ask! Good luck!!

I found nobody there to help me out that is why i came accross this forum based site. I know you can help me out regarding this issue.
I only need configuration regarding NAT. I mean how to use those private IP's on router or WAN so as to access internet.(In short how to route or use those private IP's to public IP or WAN IP given by BSNL so as to access internet) And what IP addresses, DNS's and Gateways i have to set on those PC's. That's It. I don't need any Security, nor VPN nor any routing Protocol like things. Just simple internet sharing.. Now i think u can help me out.. Please, it's very urgent matter.. I can't wait for any Cisco guy or any person in physical.. thanks in advance.. Quote:

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
You need to configure the router to supply DHCP services and configure all of the machines for automatic IP addressing. In truth, the installation defaults for Windows will normally connect to most broadband routers in their default configuration.
There is no routing required here for simple Internet access, and I think you're making this issue MUCH harder than it really is. Let the machines do all the work of addressing the router and providing the Default Gateway and DNS addresses, that's why DHCP was created!

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
I understand where you're comming from. But to setup a Cisco router is a lot of work and it isn't like the SOHO routers you buy for your house. Cisco routers begin life with nothing configured and you have to put all the commands in yourself. That's why they have certifications for these. I've read through the CCNA and will be sitting the cert soon so I'll help you with this tomorrow as I'm about to finish work. Please setup the network to the way I have given it to you in the diagram in last post.

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
I Agree.
But believe me, we have to configure this router just as SOHO. We have already enabled the Fa 0/0 and serial ports. And we have given IP address 210.212.109.66 on fast ethernet 0/0, DNS address - 218.248.240.135 Gateway - 61.0.192.133 and no IP address on serial. We have set IP's, DNS and Gateways on all four PC's and they were working fine(as in my first thread). And internet is working perfectly on those PC's. But now, we just want to access internet from new PC's which we have added. that's it. Now, please help me out if you really can.. Once again thanks for your kind support Quote:

I'm sure Cisco tech support would be more than happy to assist you with a simple setup for their router.

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Sorry I didn't get back to you like I said I would yesterday. Got dragged in to help with a project at work lol.
Ok connect the console cable into the console port and the computer COM port and login using hyperterminal. Now configure fa0/1 (the port connected to the switch) with the following configuration: IP address: 192.168.1.254 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Now in router configuration mode, type: 'ip dhcp pool internal' press enter 'network 192.168.1.0 /24' press enter 'dns-server 192.168.1.254 218.248.240.135' press enter 'default-router 192.168.1.254' press enter 'lease 7' press enter 'exit' press enter 'ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.250 192.168.1.254' press enter 'service dhcp' press enter. Now set your PCs to automatic and they should get an ip address with gateway and dns server addresses. The internet might not work for them because NAT might need to be configured but lets get this right first :).

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Hi.
I think I can help here. The following is a configuration that should get you working. It assumes that the Internet modem connects to FastEthernet 0/0 and the LAN switch is connected to FastEthernet 0/1. It isn't clear why you have the Serial ports so I haven't provided a configuration for this. If you enter each of the commands line by line (hitting 'enter' at each line) as listed below you should be fine. You will need to be in configuration mode which looks like ~ router_name(config)# ~ when you enter these commands. If you have previously set addresses then you should know how to do this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- service password-encryption ! hostname <<<name of your router>>> ! ip subnet-zero ! ip dhcp excluded-address 10.10.10.253 ! ip dhcp pool Internal network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 dns-server 218.248.240.135 netbios-node-type h-node default-router 192.168.1.254 ! username <<<your name>>> privilege 15 secret <<<your own password choice>>> ! interface FastEthernet0/0 description BSNL Internet connection ip address 210.212.109.66 255.255.255.248 no ip unreachables ip nat outside duplex auto speed auto ! interface FastEthernet0/1 description Local Area Network (LAN) connection ip address 192.168.1.254 no ip unreachables ip nat inside no ip virtual-reassembly duplex auto speed auto ! interface Serial0/0/0 ! interface Serial0/0/1 ! ip classless ! ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 FastEthernet0/0 ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 61.0.192.133 ! ip http server ip http access-class 23 ip http authentication local ip nat inside source list 123 interface FastEthernet0/0 overload ! ! access-list 23 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255 ! access-list 123 permit ip 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255 any ! banner login ^C ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This router is the property of <<< your Company name >>> If you are not authorised to access this router you must disconnect immediately. This router is monitored for access and unathorised use will be reported. Authorised users please enter your personal login details below ---> ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ^C ! line con 0 login local line aux 0 line vty 0 access-class 23 in login local transport input telnet ssh line vty 1 4 access-class 23 in login local transport input telnet line vty 5 15 access-class 23 in login local transport input telnet ! end ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You should then type "write memory" to save this configuration to NVRAM. This is done from the standard enable prompt - not the configuration mode. Let me know how you go. Cheers Wiz |

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Oops. Superflous command in there from my own personal network file. No need to enter the command;
ip dhcp excluded-address 10.10.10.253 You also will need to set all your PC's to obtain IP and DNS information via DHCP. The configuration I provided will allow you to connect up to 250 PC's on your LAN address and access the Internet through a shared IP address that is NAT'ted at the router. Cheers Wiz |

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Sorry to say LAZARETH1 that i could not revert u on time.
Thanks a TON for your kind support. As u say, i had made necessary changes as per your instructions. But to be very frank i didn't understand one of the line command you typed - "lease 7".. And what about NATting part, because as far as i think without NAT i could not access the outside network.. Please do reply by helping me out regarding this case.. Once again thanks for ur kind support.. Quote:

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Thanks for ur support "TheWIZ"..
But actually my internet modem(RAD's ASMi 52) is connected to the serial port on WIC2T card (On Router's WIC2T Slot) through smart serial cable V.35. And LAN switch is connected to Fast ethernet 0/0 port of the Router. Now i hope to receive the fresh configuration.. Once again thanks for your step by step configuration.. |

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Ok good to know the commands went into the router well. The lease 7 command specifies the lease time for IP addresses given to internal hosts. In this case it's in days so computers on your network will get an IP address for 7 days and then 'ask' for a new one. This all happens in the background.
Before I go further with the NAT, can you connect a computer to the switch and get an IP address automatically? I don't want to configure anymore stuff on the router until DHCP is working as diagnosing problems on a CISCO router can be a nightmare .

Re: Configure for Additional PC's to use internet
Once again thanx for ur prompt reply
So, u mean to say that we can skip this "lease 7" command also.. Well, i have already connected the computers with the LAN switch and let them configured to get IP addresses automatically. And in turn i connected that switch to the router's fast ethernet 0/0 port. Waiting for ur next instructions.. |
