first post: help with networking??
I have a compaq presario desktop 5000 running windows xp sp2 connecting with a 5g belkin wireless desktop network card. I cannot connect to the internet which uses WPA security. This is because there is no option for WPA when connecting either through windows' networking or through the card's options. I know the card is too old (it doesn't support wpa), but will getting a new one help considering windows doesn't have the correct options? The only options through windows is WEP or disable. This is not a problem with the router as another windows connecting to the interent works fine (but that compute is newer and has the options for wpa through the windows settings). I have tried to download a few patches from the microsoft website to support wpa but it said they only work for sp1. Do I need to download any drivers or something? Can someone show me where to download these (could not find on Compaq website)?? Any help??????

Re: first post: help with networking??
First of all if your driver dosn't have the WPA option then its probably doesn't support it so a new card with this would help. It windows is saying you need at least SP1 then I say download and install SP2. Not only will this add new features to windows for you, it will also dramatically increase your security level. Right now your system is a sitting duck for hackers and malware and I'm surprised its still going. GET SP2 NOW!!

Re: first post: help with networking??
i stand corrected, Your not a sitting duck, but a roman legionary in the tortoise formation! (well as secure as you can be in windows lol). Ok so I think you'll need to get a wireless card with WPA support. When you get a new card with this, the windows built in wireless service will have the option for WPA.
