Network activity

I have a linksys switch that has continuous network activity on one of its ports that will only stop when I unplug the cable. Once the cable is plugged back in that activity starts again. This appears to be slowing down my network to a crawl. Would this be a cable problem or a switch problem. I've eliminated a computer problem beause I have turned off all the PCs on the network and still see the continuous activity.

Re: Network activity

Someone hacked into your network somehow?

What is on the other end of the cable?

Re: Network activity

I don't think it's a hack. I've run virus scans, root kit, and spyware scans on the server. All clean.

There is another switch on the other end of the cable.

Re: Network activity

Wats the make of the other switch? It sounds like the switches are exchanging MAC table entries. How long has this been going on? Is it just these 2 switches connected or is there more to this chain?

Re: Network activity

The server feeds a switch which has some PCs connected to it and also other down stream switches. Each switch has between 3 and 5 connections either PCs or other switches.

The switch having the problem is connected to another linksys switch.

Re: Network activity

When you say downstream switches, how many of them are there? An exact number would b nice.
