I am running a Gateway laptop with Pentium M 725 Centrino (1.6Ghz, 400 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache, 1 GB RAM).
I have XP SP2 - and am just downloading SP3 (using a slow dial-up - it will take 5 hours!). My wireless facility is: Intel PROSET Wireless 2200BG running Intel PROSET Wireless software 11..0.0. I also use Windows XP to direct wireless internet access, switching between the two systems. For dial-up, I am using a third-party provider. I am not a computer buff. HERE IS THE PROBLEM. When I connect to the Internet using either Intel or Windows software, Internet Explorer will not take me to the Internet. The signal strength for both software facilities says LOW (Windows), GOOD (Intel). I am shown as being connected. I know that I am connected, because some programmes will update using the wireless connection (AVG Anti-Virus). But I cannot connect using Internet Explorer 7. I have tried downloading and installing Firefox and Safari. Neither of these will make a connection either. Internet Explorer makes a connection to Google using the dial-up facility. Device Manager says that the hardware and drivers are working properly. When I run a diagnosis using Windows, I am told that there is a problem with the (Windows) firewall, and that I need to allow various kinds of access through three ports. I have tried switching the Firewall off, but this does not solve the problem. What do I do? It is driving me bonkers - and it is eating away all my working hours. Although I have a separate Vista computer, I like my Gateway because it is light, cheap, functional, and portable. I don't want to have to ditch it. And who would have it anyway? My guess is that I have somehow altered some critical combination of acronyms somewhere.... or that the dial-up facility has somehow taken over. (I have tried various combinations of Never dial up, Only dial-up when... etc etc). Please help me, guys! |
