A number of networking questions

My computer is ordinarily connected to a router for internet access rather than directly to the modem. Whenever I do plug my computer directly to my modem however, I get limited or no connectivity. I am unsure why and I was wondering what might cause that.

My router acts as a proxy between the DNS and my computer, preventing me from getting the correct IP addresses of the DNS. I'm wondering if I could find the correct IP addresses by plugging my computer directly into my modem.

Re: A number of networking questions

Your getting limited or no connectivity because the modem needs to detect the hardware address of your computer to effectivily communicate on the web etc.

So plug the modem directly into your computer, and then unplug the power to your modem, leave for 30 secs, and then plug back in. This should fix the problem.

PS. You will have to do this if you want to plug the modem back into the router.

Re: A number of networking questions

Ok. Now try clicking on start > run and type in cmd then enter. Now type ipconfig /release and press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew.

try the internet now. If it still doesn't work, then do a ipconfig /all again and let me see if anything's changed.

Re: A number of networking questions

So, I replugged my computer to the modem and typed ipconfig /release and got the following message:

IP Address for adapter Local Area Network has already been released.

Then I inputted ipconfig /renew and after a slight delay got the following message:

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

I haven't done an ipconfig /all yet as I wanted to post this.

Re: A number of networking questions

The only other reason I can think of it not working is that you ISP has some sort of filtering enable to stop other computers from using the internet. (My ISP in UK did this) Contact your ISP and explain your situation to them. They should be able to help.

Re: A number of networking questions

You realize that you MUST power cycle the modem whenever the attached device changes, right?
