need help - providing internet access with wireless

Hello all

I want ask a few question. I want to open an Internet cafe whereas in that area, broadband Internet is not availabe. The premise is about 1 to 2km from my house, so I think I can broadcast signal from my house.

Before that, I have a little or none knowledge about wireless network. What I have to do? Did an antenna functions as transmitter and receiver at the same time?

The situation is like this. My house functions as a 'base' to transmit the signal, and at that soon-to-be my Internet cafe can receive the signal. Did I have to install both same antenna to my house and Internet cafe ?

I have a litte budget (what can u expect from a freshie graduate .. hihihi) .. I am not pretty handy in DIY .. so what is the perfect solution to my problem?

Thank u in advance for replying.

My System

Well, you'll have a few obstacles to overcome:

1 - Do you have a direct line of sight from your house to the Cafe location?

2 - Have you checked with your provider to make sure you can run a business off of their link? Some require you to pay an additional monthly fee.

3 - In addition to #1 .... will that line-of-sight be there down the road?

4 - I'm guessing that you've checked on the availability of DSL and Cable for internet access ... what about a T1?

My mother lives out "in the sticks" where cable/DSL hi-speed also not available. She has satellite broadband and it works great!

If you have line-of-sight, some hi-gain directional antennas would probably do the job. You might have issues with bandwidth if you have multiple connections at the remote site, but you could have a couple of transmit/receive pairs to help with that issue.

from my house to cafe .. it is a paddy field. i mean .. open area. i can see the almost whole building from my house.

hurm .. i don't know :P . btw, from my perseptive of view.. i think i just want to use it for my usage - my LAN. shh..don't tell tell them .. :P

this is what I want to ask. what is line-of-sight? as I said .. i don't know much about wireless :(( . i have look another forum in Internet that also said about LOS.

get this from goggle:
Quote:
line-of-sight (LOS) propagation: Of an electromagnetic wave, propagation in which the direct ray from the transmitter to the receiver is unobstructed, i.e., the transmission path is not established by or dependent upon reflection or diffraction. Note: The need for LOS propagation is most critical at VHF and higher frequencies.
from my house to Cafe, there is no "big" electric cable. i mean .. the one with a tower that carries very high voltage. it is an open field (paddy field), and there is a road in front of the building.

T1 is very expensive. In Malaysia, most-used broadband Internet here is Streamyx where it is using copper technology while that new housing estate where my Cafe is located is using fiber. My house is copper. TM Net (ISP-Streamyx provider) will not install 'pizza box' unless they receive high demand to their service. Pizza box solution is not an option at least for 3 incoming years.

satellite broadband is also not availabe in my place :(( i am in developing country with a damn highest twin tower in the world (Petronas Twin Tower) that don't even give a single benefit to me.

I've done some 'research' .. and this helps me a little about long-range wireless network.

http://wireless.gumph.org/articles/longrangelink.html
http://wireless.gumph.org/content/4/...reless-ap.html
http://www.airstation.com/english/ai...ro/lineup.html

but it doesn't explain me much how to implement it. i mean .. the network topology.

What I plan is something like this;

[HOME: Internet <- Router -> Antenna] [<- Antenna <- AccessPoint <- PC (Gateway) <-Switch <- LAN : INTERNET CAFE]

or

[HOME: Internet <- Router -> Antenna] [<- PC (Gateway) with WiFi Card <- Switch <- LAN : INTERNET CAFE]

note: in Internet Cafe, LAN is using wired.

which one is correct or both are incorrect? Can someone suggest what is the most efficient judging the budget cost around US1000 for router, antenna, etc etc - for networking purpose.

p/s: sorry for my english. i try to be very polite but my vocabulary is limited. if my statement is harsh, believe me, it is not what i really meant :(

You need a WAP (Wireless Access Point) on one end, and a Wireless Bridge on the other end, each with hi-gain directional antennas pointing at each other. You could use a broadband router on the remote end to be a local DHCP server when the link might be down, and to provide a degree of control over what happens.

let say .. Internet cafe now is my LAN. my house is the remote. so .. i have to do this;

wireless bridge in home -> antenna -><- antenna<-access point in internet cafe

where should i put the broadband router then? did my 'topology' correct? i don't have pretty clear information about router. i read .. some of them also function as modem.
