ICS host can't access internet when ICS enabled

I wanted to keep my other post on topic so here is my current problem.

i have dsl that goes to my desktop

my desktop and laptop are on a wireless network that works fine as far as i can tell. ie. each can access the others shared folders etc.

when i enable ICS on the desktop's LAN connection (the dsl) the desktop loses the internet.
ICS disabled = desktop can get online
ICS enabled = desktop can't access internet

also, i have never successfully accessed the internet from the client laptop, even though the network looks ok.
