networking drive

my brother lives about ten minutes away from me and he is about to get the same broadband service that i got. most of the time now he at my house using a crossover to connect through my computer. we do a lot of file sharing between the internet and each other's computer. he has xp home and i have vista home premium.

hope that will explain my question: when he gets the service hooked up, how can we still be on our same little network so he can access and change my files and vice versa from his house. now i can go to my network folder and see his computer and my computer and i can access all that i need on his computer. i want to be able to do that still without him being 8 feet away from me using a crossover Ethernet cable. would we have to map a network drive for each of our shared folders and somehow maby put the ip address as the location and type the same location on the other computer to find it? is that crazy enough to work? any help would be appreciated.
