Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

I'm sure time and time again most of you guys see this post over and over, and if you guys can give me the thread link that was originally used so i can look at it that would be very helpful Anyways, I've been searching online like crazy for this answer, trying to change my ip address to disabling my firewall, at first i keep getting, limited or no connectivity, but after following one instructions of manually setting the ip address for both network connection and subnet, i lost that connection error, but still i can't see the other pc or ping it. So yeah, was wondering if anyone can help me from here. Oh I'm just trying to connect the two so that i can transfer files, but the 2 pc's don't see each other at all. Thank you for your time guys

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

qrfalpha,

This is different depending on whether you have XP Pro or XP Home. And
depending on your current configuration of each OS.

However... for the purposes of this discussion, I will assume you have XP
Home on both machines in the default out-of-the-box configuration (simple
file sharing enabled). First disable any firewall software on both PCs.

1) Connect the PCs with one cross-over cable (as someone else said, many new
NICs will auto-adjust to whatever cable is in use - but without this
auto-adjustment capability, you will need a cross-over cable).

2) As someone else said, make sure they are on the same network (go into the
TCP/IP config of each machine and set IP and mask to same network -
192.168.1.1 on one, 192.168.1.2 on the other and Mask of 255.255.255.0 will
work).

3) Go to each PCs System Properties (right-click My Computer and choose
Properties) and choose Computer Name | Change | Select Workgroup and type in
the same Workgroup name for each PC.

4) After steps 1-3, reboot them both. Open explorer on each machine and
right-click on the C drive and choose sharing and security. Set to share the
C drive of each PC. (give each PC share the same name - something like
cdrive).

5) Go to Windows Explorer on one (or both) PCs and pull down the Tools menu
and choose "Map Network Drive". In the Folder field type
\\otherPCname\cdrive and click on Finish. You should see the other machine's
C drive come up in the Explorer window.

Let me know if this works.

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

I apologize for the delay in me replying to you John. For awhile there i didn't think no one was gonna help me out lol. Anyways on with what I have tried I'm trying to connect my much older PC to my newer PC with a Crossover cable, to transfer all the old data to the new one. The Old PC is running WinXP Pro version 2002 SP2. The newer one is WinXP Pro version 2002 SP3. I do have Norton AV on my new PC if that is a cause for concern on connectivity.

I did all you advise me to do from steps 1-5 on step 4 where i set the C drive to share on both my PC something weird happen, at least i think this what cause this error to occur, and that is that my internet stopped working. I was unable to load any website. I did a system restore after trying to restart twice to see if it fixed the issue, and with system restore it was back up again. It may have been a glitch, i have no idea. On step 5 when trying to map network drive I had two tabs one is Drive: the other is Folder: I have a default value of Z, I left that as it was, and under Folder: I typed in \\homeone\d for the share drive i Have on my old PC, I don't know if that was right what I did. when I hit finished, it produced a error msg of "The network path \\homeone\d could not be found."

Here is also a copy of my ipconfig /all from my new pc just in case u need that because i been seeing johnwill or others use it alot
attached to my dxdiag log incase u need more info

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

qrfalpha,

Sorry - I didn't realize there was an Internet connection involved. I just thought your wanted to connect two PCs together for simple filesharing via a Crossover cable.

How is the Internet connected? Do you have DUAL NICs in one or both of the PCs or are you using a USB-NIC?

Had I know there was existing internet connectivity, my advice would have taken this into account. Are you back up and running on the Internet again?

The best solution would be to purchase an inexpensive router or switch to network these PCs together for filesharing, while at the same time, allow them both Internet access via your ISP.

- John

I'm not a pro but i'll try to help, don't flame me if im wrong .

You can try disabling your wireless network adapter by right clicking it and disable it from 'view network connections' when you want to link both pc's with the cross over cable. And see if they could be linked.

On the other hand if you want to share files and go online at the same time, you can change your ip address to a different segment, eg. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 on your Local Area Connection 2 to avoid conflict between the 2 Network adapter (If there is)

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

Take a look at this Microsoft ICS (Internet Connection Sharing tutorial.

Also, let's see this for each computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

actually i'm sorry Johnhook. I don't need the old PC to have any internet connection at all. I guess it was my fault for not stating everything clearly lol. but yeah, I just want to clean out my old hard drives on the old pc with all my music and video's on them to the new one before i reformat the whole thing. I tried doing it the easy way of plugging a external HD to the old pc, but funny thing is it won't detect any of the Ex-HD maybe because I think it's not USB 2.0 capable. anyways, i only talked about the internet thing because thats what i'm using on the new computer to talk to you guys lol, and when i tried doing those "steps" for some odd reason it stopped my Mozilla+IE to stop working until i did a system restore. As weird as what chunwei said in his reply imma try that tonight after i get home from work to see if disabling my "wireless" connection would let the crossover connection to work. *shrugs* thank you guys for the help this far, oh btw, a long time ago, i did use a crossover cable from the old pc to my laptop to play like diablo 2 on lan with my fiance, and that work.... maybe i can try to link the old pc and laptop and try to transfer data that way... wish me luck

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

Well I had the same problem before...there is one file missing in the networking configuration for it to work..I can't remember the name of that file though..but it's the one file that is missing or was not installed by default by Windows that will allow cross over connections to happen...

I'll try to remember that file...but it existed before for Windows 98 and ME, but was taken out on XP./...try searching for that networking file. Once you have that, you can immediately create the cross connection...

As for me, i'll defrag my brain and try to remember that file...LOl...

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

lol web, yeah of course there's always the way of getting a router. I have a wireless router 2 rooms away, and i'm just being lazy on carrying this new pc and the old one way over there to do this lol, I mean i'm just trying to get this to work, because if it does, at least we, or mostly "I" lol, can solve this issue once and for all, and for anyone I know that has a similar problem

Re: Help connecting 2 pc's with crossover cables

by golly, I guess chunwei was right, I disabled wireless internet on my laptop, had to set up the IP's manually on the old pc and laptop with what u guys told me, hit F5 several times, and POOF there she is, thanks again guys from all your help. I wish there was a way to bypass having to DISABLE wireless internet... kind of a hassle, but hey at least I got what I wanted to work. Thanks again guys I guess the only other question I have now which I will leave for another day lol is my America's Army game, where my character would freeze up in place for 2-5 secs, which isn't because of lag because i see all the other players move and shoot still, and then i can move again... not sure if this is also the place to report those kind of things lol, but yeah thanks a million guys
