Gateway connection problems
Hi,
I have a Dell laptop computer that has been recently giving me some problems connecting to the internet. One day my wireless internet connection stopped working and now I cant seem to connect to the web. Even when I go to a local coffee shop, where I know there is nothing wrong with the internet, now I can no longer get the internet. I can connect to a wireless network, but I cant use the net. I have tried reconfiguring the router and connecting the modem directly to my computer (via Lan) I think the problem has something to do with my Gateway connection, as it seems to be the problem when I run a window's diagnostic on internet connection. I have tried ipconfig, release, renew and I never get a default gateway. I get an IP address and a SUB net mask, just no gateway. My internet connections are currently set to automatically detect. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks Avi |

Re: Gateway connection problems
Please could you supply the following.....
Operating system (version of Windows/Mac/Linux) Exact model of your Laptop (this should be on the underside of the unit) Exact model of your wireless adapter. You should be able to find this by holding the Windows key and pressing "R" a run command will appear. Here type devmgmt.msc. The following window that appears will give you all information about your hardware.

Re: Gateway connection problems
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Gateway connection problems
Very curious, you have no default gateway!
[TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.[/b] Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine.

Re: Gateway connection problems
Thanks a lot. I will try the commands. By the way, I'm not sure if this will be a problem but when I was looking earlier on to fix this problem and I came across a blog that suggested deleting winsock.dll ... I didnt delete the file, I just changed that name but now I cant seem to find the particular file I changed it to (which was sockwin.dll)
I will let you know how the commands work. Thanks again ac |

Re: Gateway connection problems
I tried the two commands
First the reset TCP/IP, this is the result I got: C:\Documents and Settings\Avi Cohen>netsh int ip reset reset.log WARNING: Could not obtain host information from machine: [D6X9G981]. Some commands may not be available. Class not registered The second command to reset the winsock was successful and I rebooted my computer. But I still cannot access the internet Any ideas? Is there a way I can just go back to factory defaults for all my internet settings? |

Re: Gateway connection problems
That is the way to go back to factory defaults that I have you! However, you must have removed more registry entries than that reset fixes.
Time to use this SFC Tutorial and try to repair Windows. If that doesn't do it, the next step would be to do a repair installation over the existing Windows. How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
