Grin WRT300N Linksys Router Vista Networking

I have a linksys WRT300N Router. I have a laptop and a desktop computer. I want to network them so they can share files and play games over the LAN. The Laptop(through a wireless connection) can see the liknsys router with a diagram that looks like this (Laptop)=====(Linksys Router)---------(Internet). The computer says (PC)--------(local network)-------(internet). The laptop allows a full map view, but the desktop is not able to display it. Both connect to the internet, but how do i make them "see" eachother. Thanks!

Re: WRT300N Linksys Router Vista Networking

amoliski,

What versions of Windows are you running on both PCs (XP, Vista)? What, if any, internet security/firewall/anti-virus software are you running on both PCs (specify software / version)? What is the make/model of the Linsys router you're using?

You either have firewall settings that are blocking windows filesharing, filesharing is NOT installed and configured on these PCs and/or the router is blocking the routing of the Windows filesharing protocols.

More information will help us diagnose and fix your problem.

Re: WRT300N Linksys Router Vista Networking

Both computers are running vista with the latest versions of norton. The router is model WRT300N, and the problem seems to be that the computers can not "see" eachother.

Re: WRT300N Linksys Router Vista Networking

amoliski,

You need to open up Windows File Sharing and Netbios under the advanced Firewall configuration settings in Norton on BOTH PCs. Also, make sure file sharing is enabled in the Network config on both PCs and BOTH PCs are members of the same Workgroup (there should be a wizard for this in Vista under Networking).

Don't have Norton installed here right now, otherwise I'd tell you step-by-step how to open up Windows Filesharing and Netbios in Norton. Also, in Norton, you need to open up (allow access) to the network range for your local area network (i.e. 192.168.0.1 thru 192.168.0.254 - or similar depending on your router's addressing scheme.
