[SOLVED] Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
Hello,
First off, other than following the directions on the included CD and quick setup diagram, I am relatively naive as far as intepreting the information presented to me after logging into 192.168.0.1. But this has happened to me twice now. I first installed a d-link DIR-615 and while the wireless connection zoomed along, my host pc was slowed to next to nothing. After some advice that the ports might be bad, I got another and the the same thing happened. A friend of mine mentioned I might want to clone the MAC address, so I did with no improvement noted (this was also mentioned in the 615 manual). So I went back to Best Buy and purchased the Dynex DX-WEGRTR router (had good reviews). The installation went fine and I had improved performance on my host pc (cable), but it's still way too slow (almost 10 times slower than my wireless connection, as measured by speedtest.net) and makes it difficult to view videos and download mail via Outlook. If I connect to the cable modem like it was before I bought the router, the pc goes back to normal. This is very frustrating and do not know what to do next. If anyone needs more information, I will get it for you once I get home from work, but wanted to ask for any help that would be easy for me to do/understand before I get down in the weeds with this. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. |

Re: Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
Some things you can try here.
Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Re: Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
johnwill,
have done both with both routers (actually, this Dynex already has the most recent firmware) I've used to set up my network and it hasn't improved the speed of the host computer. Have updated the network adapter, also. Thanks |

Re: Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
Have you tried other machines with a wired connection? What is the result of those tests?

Re: Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
johnwill,
I hooked up my laptop to the wired connection and it ran fine. So I added a new NIC card to my computer (the other was on-board the motherboard) and now it (the original host computer) is flying better than it ever has. I appreciate your interest in helping me. Take care and have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! |

Re: Host computer/pc much slower than wireless laptop connected to the network
So, the new NIC has restored normal speeds?
