Re: Connecting to another network's computer
I made a file transfer program with a server and a client.
I put the server in my one of my friend's computers , he has a LAN of 3 computers in his house , 192.168.160.2 , (192.168.160.3) <- (the computer where i put the server) and 192.168.160.4. If i wanted to connect my client to his server using my computer (obviously not on his LAN), what address should i use? If i was on his LAN i would directly use 192.168.160.3 , but i am not , so how will i connect? |

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
To connect to his network over the Internet, you'll have to consider something like a VPN, and also there will be some configuration of any router's in the path as well.

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
His public IP address is the thing to use.

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
You mean the external IP address? Isn't that one used by all computers in the network? If not , how can i get his public IP?

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
You could have your friend visit either www.whatismyip.com or www.ipchicken.com and tell you his IP. However, this still won't allow you to connect to the server with just his IP, you'd need to configure his home router (either opening ports, forwarding ports, or triggering ports) to forward the connection from your computer to the server on his network. Not knowing how you wrote the program or how you're telling it to connect to the server I couldn't help you much more. Sad to say I wouldn't be able to provide much more help even if I did know this information. If your program uses a port it might just be as simple as telling his router to forward that port to the server and that should solve it. Sorry for the long winded reply of little help :) Best of luck

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
I've wrote it in VB. It has a textbox for the ip and the port is in the code.
However, i dont have access to the router's configurations because i dont know the access password. It's not the default one... |

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
most if not all routers have a reset to default function, usually holding in the reset button for 15-30 seconds while powered on or something like that. A quick google search with the brand and model should reveal that. Of course thats only with your friends knowledge and permission should you do that lol. Also be sure to ask if maybe said friend has any special setup for their network, don't want to open up a can of worms. If that all goes well then you should be able to forward the ports in his network to the server computer and simply tell your program to connect to his external IP address and the router will forward everything to the server. Best of luck with that, let me know how it works out

Re: Connecting to another network's computer
Connecting to another location through routers and other gateways requires some configuration of the entire path, that's the way it works.
