networking win 98 and win xp home
Hi,
if anyone can help me with this, i would appreciate it. situation: i have a win98 se desktop, toshiba laptop (xp home) and a dell laptop(win xp home). file and printer sharing are enabled on each. from the desktop win 98 pc, i can copy files to/from the toshiba laptop(xp home) and from the toshiba laptop to the win98 pc. from the desktop win 98 pc, i can copy files to/from the dell laptop(xp home) and from the dell laptop to the win98 pc. the problem is this: i am not able to copy files from either xp laptop to the other, but when i display network neighborhood on either laptop, it will show both xp computers. i know from calling time warner, dell and toshiba and linksys, that the problem is not related to any of the above. i would really like to find out why the 2 xp home laptops cannot copy files from 1 to the other. if you need any other info on this, please ask. thank you, Mickey |

Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
What are the exact symptoms of the inability to copy the files? What are the exact error messages you receive?

Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
Hi,
i do not get any messages when i copy files from either laptop to the desktop or from the desktop to either laptop. i primarily use the desktop (win98) pc to backup files from either laptop(xp home) when i try to copy any file from the toshiba laptop to the dell laptop, this is what i get cannot copy file "filename": access is denied make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. this seems to happen everytime that i try to copy files from the toshiba xp home laptop, to the dell xp home laptop. without having to burn files to a cd on the toshiba and then load the from the cd on the dell, i am having to copy files desired from the toshiba laptop to the win98 desktop and then copy then from the win98 desktop to the dell laptop. thank you for responding. Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (or COMMAND for W98) to open a command prompt. In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type. PING <ip address> or PING <computer name> Where: <ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address <computer name> - is the computer name A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther. Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection. Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic. All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing. If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
Hi,
i went thru your writeup and did the ipconfig/all on each pc. i then used the info to ping each pc and it was successful. i then checked all of the services and they were ok. then when i checked sharing on the dell xp home pc, i realized that i had not checked, allow network users to change my files. after i did that i was able to copy folder/files of things like midis, mp3's, documents, etc. but after reinstalling a piece of software on the dell that works fine on the toshiba, i tried to copy the files from the program file folder on the toshiba to the dell and it would not allow it. i forgot to write down the error message. i am not sure why that did not work, because it is something i do all the time between the toshiba and win98 se pc or vice versa. it just saves the time of not having to re-enter a bunch of info. thank you for your help Mickey |

If you try again and tell us the exact error message, we can probably help.

Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
hi,
this seems to be my last problem, as everything else is working. i have a piece of software that i purchased called Masque Games. It is a collection of slot machines and blackjack. i have it installed on the win 98 pc and each xp laptop. frequently, i copy the files for it from whatever pc i play on to another, that way each pc has the same stats. i can copy it fine from the win98 pc to the toshiba xp pc or vice versa. when i try to copy it from the toshiba xp to the dell xp, i get this cannot create or replace MasqueGames. Access is denied. make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. the pc was even using the game, when i tried this and it the same thing happens everytime i try to copy a folder within program files from the toshiba to the dell. Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
Sounds like a permissions issue. What version of XP on each machine, XP-Home or XP-Pro?

Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
On the XP machines, do this.
Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents: You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD. 1)Filename : FIXANON.REG 2)Save as type: all files 3)Encoding: ANSI If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be FIXANON.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result. ------------------- Use text after this line ------------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] "restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000 ------------------- Use text before this line ----------------- Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question. Reboot the computer.

Re: networking win 98 and win xp home
Hi,
ok i created the FIXANON.REG file as per instructions. then i ran it on the toshiba. it ran ok. then i copied the file to the dell and ran it, it ran ok. rebooted each xp laptop. after they were both totally ready, i tried to copy a folder from the toshiba (program files) to the dell (program files). got this \\dell\c\program files is not accessible. you may not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. access is denied.
