[SOLVED] Connection refused for one client

Hi

I've been battling with this for a couple of days and would be grateful for another perspective.

I have a small peer to peer windows network (cable, not wireless) with two machines running XP Home (SP2) and an Olivetti d-Copia 200MF printer / photocopier. An ADSL router links the hardware and provides internet access. The router provides a firewall and DHCP.

One client (192.168.1.4) is able to bring up the printer admin page (192.168.1.5) and print to the printer, the other (192.168.1.6) produces a notice from Firefox which says that the site is valid but the connection is being refused. The second client can ping the printer but not print to it.

The network settings on the two clients seem identical to me. Both are not using the Windows firewall.

For what it's worth the PC that is giving trouble is dual-booting Ubuntu 8.04. I can't access the printer webpage through Ubuntu either.

Any idea where I should start looking?

Thanks

Mike

Re: Connection refused for one client

Alternate method ?
You could try doing a add Printer> local printer, uncheck automatically detect and install , then on the "Use the following port" screen , Select the Create a New port radio button at the bottom, use the drop down and select standard TCP/IP Port , choose next , then give it 192.168.1.5 and take the default on the port name. Then finish out the rest of the screens.

Try setting up your printer this way and see if it will work.

Re: Connection refused for one client

Thanks for your reply.

I have set up the printer in this way - created the port trying IP address as well as hostname. The printer seems to be set up OK, but any printjobs sent to the printer fail.

Re: Connection refused for one client

Let's see this for each of the two machines while running Windows.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

[SOLVED] Connection refused for one client

Thanks for your detailed reply.

It turned out that there were IP filters on the printer which only allowed clients in the range 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.5 to access the device. This is why the printer could be pinged but not administered over a webpage. I extended the IP filter range and we're back in business.

I do appreciate the help offered though.
