Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
Just like the title says, my machine keeps freezing if I'm connected to the internet via my router. If I unplug the ethernet cable from the machine, then there are no problems. But as soon as it's plugged back in, the processor is constantly working and the machine eventually freezes.
I've tried disabling my anti-virus (AVG 8) and my windows firewall to see if there's some sort of conflict there, but without success. And now I'm completely stumped as to what to try. |

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
Try the obvious, reload the network drivers first.

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc
Please respond to all the following steps.
Let's see this as well. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
I have had a problem simalar to this were the result was a VIRUS, now when the computer tries to access the internet while no adapter is plugged in then nothing happens as your computer hasnt actually accessed the internet at this stage but when connected it does and this virus was programmed to terminate your computers session nasty **** thing.
Long story short i would try to run some advance anti virus programs. Could also try this online scanner http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ The other thing that has happened to me in the past is that the version of internet explorer would **** its self only when connecting to the internet. Try using an older version. And last but not least Press and hold the windows key, followed by the Pause/Break key, this will open System Properties. Click Advance then click the settings button under Start Up and recovery then untick Automatically Restart button under system Failure. What this will do is determine if it is blue screening, if it is you will see the code take picture or write it and send back to us. Josh |

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
I've run anti-virus prograns and come back with absolutely nothing. So unless it 's something they don't recognise, it's not that.
Internet Explorer, I haven't tried an older version, but this doesn't neccessaily happen when I have IE open, just that the machine is connected to my router. I did the last thing you mentioned, but I'm not getting a blue screen or snything when the problem occurs, the display just freezes and I have to press the restart button on the front of the machine. |

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
That sounds like the NIC hardware or a driver issue. It could also be a corrupted Windows installation, hard to say without any symptoms to chase.

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
I've re-installed Vista twice also, deleting the partition and creating a new one. I have a friend who may have a spare network card, going to try that next to see if that's the problem.

Re: Computer freezes when connected to the Internet
You can disable the MB NIC in the BIOS and try a PCI network card.
