VPN: Intranet and VPN connection

Hi,
Pls tell me some points regarding VPN:
1) Can we access the machines in my local network whils connected to VPN.
2) Can i access web portals in my network when conencted to VPN?

Rajiv1107,

Generally, you should be able to access other local intranet and internet sites, resources, etc when connected to a VPN. I use the software VPN solution built into SBS 2003 and can freely acesss both local network and internet resources while connected to the VPN.

Please reply with more specifics - VPN info (hardware, software, make/model, OS, etc) as well as the make/model of your PC and any Internet Security, Anti-Virus or Firewall hardware or software you're using.

I m able to access other m/c in network , and other internet sites.
But i am not able to connect to Webportal of my company.

I am using cisco sys vpn client. OS: Windows XP.

Also when we connect to VPN, do we remain in our local network and the other network(of VPN)?

Rajiv1107,

The internal web-portal is probably resolving to the external Internet address instead of the local LAN address. I have this same problem. The PCs are resolving the DNS of the server's domain name/address using your ISP's DNS server - resolving to the external Internet address rather than the internal LAN address.

You can get around this by manually typing the web-server's internal LAN address in your browser and/or manually coding the server's domain name and local IP address into the /windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts on all PCs or VPN connected PCs on your LAN.
