WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

I have had the listed router for over a year now, it before I installed Vista, it worked fine.

Now, it still works fine, as long as I don't reboot. When I reboot, the computer doesn't recognize the router, and so there is no internet connection.

Usually, when I power cycle the router it works, but most of the time I have to hook my computer directly to the cable modem to establish a connection - then I switch the cables (cable to router, router to computer) and the connection establishes.

Sounds odd. What is going on there?

Thanks.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

chipmafia,

Check out:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101692.asp

Vista seems to have connection issues with certain wireless routers - especially with laptop PCs.

If the link above doesn't help, check out:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v6.asp

And browse through the FAQs on this site.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

I guess in my ignorance I really don't know what I need.

My laptop and PS3 connect just fine to the network. Even when the PC (it is directly hooked to the router) isn't able to connect, the wireless network is viable.

I'll try the suggestions on the link above, but I'm not sure they directly answer my problem.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

chipmafia,

Did you upgrade from XP to Vista? If so, there may be driver issues causing this problem. Go to your laptop MFG's support site, go to downloads, put in your model and locate the Wireless Network drivers for Vista. Download these drivers and install them. This might be the issue.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

The problem isn't with my laptop but with my desktop.

I didn't upgrade from XP, but I did a clean install. After that clean install, I started having problems with the desktop not recognizing the router. If I toy with it, the desktop will recognize the router as a "Residential Gateway" and it functions just fine - allowing my desktop to connect to the interent with the following connection:

Desktop -> Router -> Cable Modem

The Router, whether it is connected to the desktop or not, is always online. In otherwords, the connection between the Modem and the Router is sound. The connnection between the desktop and the Router is where I am experiencing this issue.

I have checked, rechecked, and bought new cables. Nothing.

Again, after some "toying" I can get it to work. The problem exists one reboot.

Thanks for your patience with my lack of clarity about the issue I'm having.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On each of the computers, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

chipmafia,

Go into your network adapter device properties - and DISABLE the option "allow windows to turn off this device to save energy" or something like that. Sometimes those disconnections are caused by windows turning it off for half-a-second for some odd reason

Also - go into your Router and disable uPNP.

Try these two things and see if this stops those disconnects.

Basically described above - Upon reboot, the computer does not recognize the router, and therefore does not connect to the internet. However, the router is connected to the internet and I am able to connect wirelessly with my laptop and PS3. If I unplug the desktop from the router and plug it directly to the cable modem, I get connection. Then, I can hook it back to the original configuration (modem->router->computer) and the computer then recognizes it.

I did these things, rebooted, and I am still having the same problems.

I was able to unplug the router, plug it into the cable modem - acheive connection - then change it back to the original configuration, and obviously it works.

This is an untechnical assessment, but it is almost as if I am "priming" the connection.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

chipmafia,

Go to:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103100.asp

Right-click on the appropriate download button (North America or elsewhere). Save this file to your desktop.

Follow steps 1 thru 12 on this page.

Reboot your cable modem and router AFTER this is complete. Try connecting up your Vista PC and see if you're able to access the Internet.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

I followed the steps, and nothing. I was able to resestablish connection, but only after doing what I did above.

No idea where to go next.

Re: WGR614 V6 NETGEAR Router and Vista - Computer can't find router

chipmafia,

Go into the device manager, open up the network hardware, right-click on the Ethernet adapter you're using and click Properties. Click on the "Configure" button, then on the "Advanced" tab - go through the Property list and document all of the settings for each parameter. Also, click on the "Power" tab and make sure ALL power management features are disabled.

Dumb question and hopefully it won't insult you - but have you tried swapping the Ethernet cable between the PC and router with a different cable? Have you tried connecting to a different port on the router?

Check this out:

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=496371

There seems to be an issue with the Vista drivers for your motherboard's onboard Ethernet controller - and the WOL (Wake On LAN) settings. Read this post and it kinda sounds similar to the issues you're having.

One quick solution would be to disable the motherboard's built-in Ethernet hardware - go purchase a PCI Ethernet adapter (I like Intel's) that has driver support for Vista. Install this and you could see this problem go away.
