How 2 network Vista laptop + XP PC??

Hey all,
Wanting to network Vista Basic Acer Aspire 5315 Laptop + Evo W4000 PC with XPsp2. With the intention to have 2 printers available to both sys.

Purchased Linksys SD205 switch and 2x cat6 Ethernet cables (upon salesmans recomend)

XP sys has Samsung ML2010 printer via USB and both systems have drivers installed (different versions Vista + XP)
(have 2 printers to hookup, but just killed all in one, have to renew.)
Basic hookup= Vista can see evo but cant access printer. XP can't see Vista?

Unsure of what wizards to run on each machine.
User is puter literate but no experience with networks.
How do I accomplish my aim please.

NT.

Re: How 2 network Vista laptop + XP PC??

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: How 2 network Vista laptop + XP PC??

Thnx Johnwill for your response.
I realize that your response is probably a info seeking standard response, and please do not take offense when I respond with "I didnt request internet access" as the ISP service is yet another headache.

Extra hardware is required for sharing my internet connection with this modem (Bigpond (au) Maxon BP3 ext Next G wireless) and I am not prepared to part with a further $300au for the pleasure. I am happy to physically cable connect to gain net access to both sys.

I wish to concentrate on file and print sharing between the Vista and XP systems.
With this mornings bootup of sys's the Vista no longer is seeing the XP as stated in orig post.

I seek initial setup instuctions please.
Extra info...
XP PC = Compaq Evo w4000, Pentium4 2.4Ghz, 1.00Gb RAM, XP home SP2 with current updates. Is wired to SD205 via cat6 Ethernet cable. Samsung ML2010 wired via USB.

Vista Laptop= Acer Aspire 5315, Celeron 530, 1.73Ghz, 502Mb RAM, 32 bit, Vista Basic with current updates. Is wired to SD205 via cat6 Ethernet cable.

Thnx
NT.

Re: How 2 network Vista laptop + XP PC??

What's SD205?

You can start with the following information also for each computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

For the printer issue, it appears to be driver issues. You need the latest Vista drivers, but you may want to take a look at this: http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

Re: How 2 network Vista laptop + XP PC??

Thnx again,
I chkd that! but doesn't mention if applies to Vista.
I gather then,
If (the XP is printing OK!) Then
.-.uninstall print driver from Vista.
.-.If (install can see printer?) Then
.---.re-install Vista version driver??
.-.Endif
Endif
Is this right??

Re: How 2 network Vista laptop + XP PC??

Sounds reasonable. Also, I've had to install the Vista printer drivers on some systems as if the printer was local, sometimes even connecting it temporarily to the Vista system. Then, I'd access the properties and create a new local port with the full network path to the network printer as the name to "finalize" the installation.
