Re: hp laptop wireless problem

I'm confused. If you purchased a laptop and it came without the proper drivers, I'd complain to HP!

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Let's see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

Thank you for all your replies, Actually i got it from one of my friends with a fresh XP i mean just XP install. He lost most of the CD's that came originally with the Laptop.I installed pretty much all the drivers from hp site including audio and video and ethernet. The only problem im having is with installing wireless driver. The setup wizard runs but shows a blank window afterwards instead of successful/finished.
Here is my device manager window.

Also The config shows the following parameters.

Host name: admin-XXXXXX
primary Dns suffix:
Node type:Broadcast
Ip Routing Enabled: No
WINS proxy: NO

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

I'm guessing the "base system device" is actually some of the chipset drivers.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

You need to go to the HP site, and download ALL the drivers for this particular machine, they're all there in the support section.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

You have to install the utility software as well from the same site.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

Are you 100% positive your laptop came with a wireless adapter as if it did it should show up in the Device Manager.

The only reason it wouldnt show in the device manager was if you do not have one or the card has become disconnected from its wireless slot internally.

Just because there is a wireless driver for your model of laptop does not mean your laptop must have a wireless adapter, they make several models with different adapters like some come with extra USB ports or some with card readers or some with "wireless adapters" so Not...

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

Did you check the BIOS to make sure the wireless adapter is enabled there? After loading the Intel chipset drivers (top on your list), let's see a screen shot of Device Manager with Networking adapters and Other devices expanded again.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

Well, Windows recognizes no wireless hardware right now. Look in the BIOS setup and see if it's enabled. If not, and you have wireless hardware, my guess is that it's died.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

Hello again John
I pressed f10 to go in BIOS and there is nothing about wireless. In advanced tab there is only language, Device options and Boot options. So it means there is not wireless hardware in my laptop. Am i right??
On the other hand how to disable that "hard ware installation pop-up" that i posted above??? any suggestions.

Re: hp laptop wireless problem

That would be my analysis of the situation, if there is no option in the BIOS to disable it, and nothing appears in Device Manager, any wireless adapter is either dead or doesn't exist.
