Can't find the router using AOL 9.1
Any help would be appreciated. We're trying to install a Linksys WRT54g router under XP service pack 2. DSL service is provided thru a Westell 6100modem into AOL (version 9.1 AOL browser). All connections are good, ut the system cannot recognize the router. Also, Internet Explorer (7) does not access the modem. USing the XP diagnosis app for networking, it comse back and says the WINSOCK settings are incorrect and resets to defaults (with restart). Where do I go from here? Thanks.

Re: Can't find the router using AOL 9.1
Are you using AOL as your ISP? They sometimes have funny ideas how the Internet should work.
Let's see this for the machine in question. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Can't find the router using AOL 9.1
You have a good connection to the router, let's see this.
Try these simple tests. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Can't find the router using AOL 9.1
You don't appear to be getting DNS name resolution, though you do have an Internet connection.
Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: Can't find the router using AOL 9.1
johnwill ....
Thanks for the assistance. Finally achieved a good connection thru the router to AOL, as long as using the AOL version of the Internet Explorer. Still no using the Microsoft IExplorer7 to connect, but that is another issue. At least there is through-put, and the router works great as both a wired and wireless access point. IF you have any suggestions as to how to fix the IE connection problem, feel free to jump in anytime. Thanks again. |
