[SOLVED] Wireless woes in Toshiba Tecra 8200--Win 2k

Can't seem to get the integral wireless working. Admittedly I don't know what I'm doing. Networking is a weak point for me. I have my 2Wire DSL router/modem security turned off at the moment trying to get this thing going.

In the connection properties the device is listed as a "Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI card #2." When I click the "configure" button, it says the device is working properly. Manufacturer: "Lucent Technologies." Lucent Technology driver installed signed by Microsoft. Interrupt request: 11, Input-Output range: DE80-DEBF. Use automatic settings checked.

Components checked supposedly used by this connection:
Client Services for NetWare
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
NWLink NetBIOS
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Internet Connection sharing is not checked.

Authentication: Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X is checked. The two Authentication boxes are not checked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to make the machine portable and get rid of the wire.

Thanks in advance.

Susan

Can you search for wireless connections? How far do you get in the process?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi Johnwill--Thanks for your reply... To answer your questions:

1) According the the Device Manager--Network adapters:

Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection #2
Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card #2

2) In Network and Dailup Connections, I have two connections. a) The ethernet port connected by a cable, which appears to be working fine. b) The Wireless connection (which I gave the specs for in my original post) has a red x.

3) No yellow !s or ?s in the Device Manager.

The results of IPCONFIG /ALL:

Ethernet adapter Wireless:

I've been trying that with the ethernet cable unplugged, but it keeps saying "connection failed." Also a little bubble pops up telling me "network cable unplugged."

Just tried again with the same result.

Re: Wireless woes in Toshiba Tecra 8200--Win 2k

JohnWill--you are not going to believe this, and I feel like such a dork. The wireless connection has a switch on the front side of the computer. It was turned off!

I just got this machine less than a week ago, and I had to read a manual to figure out how to turn it on. There's a little door that covers the power switch. And it doesn't even look like a power switch one would expect to see. I have a Satellite 1805 and it is completely different.

Anyway, tonight I went to the Toshiba site, read about a switch for the wireless, looked it up in the manual, and lo and behold, all it took was turning it on. Guess I should have read that manual all the way through before messing with the wireless.

Sorry to have taken your time with this non-problem, or problem on behalf of the operator. I do appreciate your efforts. Thank you, and blessings to you.

Susan
