my laptop will not connect to fios if more than 10ft away
Hi i'm very new to all this. Usually my husband would do this but he is deployed. I had fios installed in Mar 08. I have had no problems with it until yesterday. I decided to try to connect the wii to the internet after a little frustration i fiqured it out. I had to reset the router because i really didn't know what i was doing. My problem now is i no longer can connect the laptop (wireless) to the router when i'm in a different room. The wii connects and the ipod touch connects anywhere in the house. I did contact fios support and they told me i had to unplugged the router and wait so i had to hang up because i have the magicjack as phone service. I took the wireless modem out looked at it and put it back but nothing different. Can anyone tell me if it is something i downloaded or is something wrong with the laptop? We have never had a problem like this before we had DSL for 6yrs and we could take our laptops anywhere even outside. Anything would be helpful. Thank you

Re: my laptop will not connect to fios if more than 10ft away
Please reply with the EXACT make/model of the laptop you're having problems with. Is the WiFi adapter built into your laptop or are you using a card or external USB WiFi Adapter? If so, I need to know the make/model of that device. I also need to know the make/model of your wireless modem and/or router. Also, do you have any cordless telephones or other cordless devices in use?
There could be several things going wrong here; You could have faulty WiFi hardware in or connected to your laptop. The settings on your router may not be working right with your laptop's WiFi hardware. You could have excessive interference from some other wireless device like a cordless telephone system. Reply with more details and either me or someone should be able to help you here. - John |

Re: my laptop will not connect to fios if more than 10ft away
I have a toshiba a105-s2091 laptop with a Atheros AR500G wireless network inside. And local connection is a Realtec RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. The router is a Actiontec MI424-WR Rev.D I have been manually putting in a IP address and been able to connect (ethernet) because it showed something way different and wouldn't change or connect if i selected automatic nothing happened. (only feet away from router) I probably messed something up by changing the settings somewhere. If i just new how it was suppose to look or be. When i try to use the wireless it says i'm connected but no internet comes up. (even right now on the bottom of my computer says wireless is connected and excellent strenghth but i tried it and nothing happens) I could use the wireless yesterday only right by the router but today i can't even do that. I do have a cordless phone right by the main computer that the router is connected to and my magicjack (my phone service) is connected to that main computer as well. I have not had a problem with the phone so far and i had it before i got the fios. I did change the channel on my router and nothing different.

Re: my laptop will not connect to fios if more than 10ft away
First off, turn off the base of the cordless phone and remove the battery from the handset. Or, you can simply take the handset to another part of the house. If that fails, maybe it's something else.
Let's see this when you're connected. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
