Wireless Connection Issue

My brother just recently bought a laptop a vostro 1500 from dell with windows xp sp2, but it is having issues connecting to the wireless router (netgear wgr614 v4) i have a WPA PSK TKIP setup and all 3 computers can connect fine to it but this laptop and his previous one (it could connect to the net until he reinstalled windows on it) could not connect. i checked the passphrase its fine, the ip is setup so i have to enter it. I have tried removing the WPA key and when i do it connects fine but with the key it doesnt. the laptop has a dell wireless 1395 wlan mini-card. when i try to connect it stays at the waiting for netowork and then just closes. help plz

I use WZC for setting up the connection

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

Try removing ALL the stored wireless profiles on the machine in question and then search for new networks and run through the connection wizard to connect.

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

Another thing you might want to do is download the newest Wireless Network driver, go to support.dell.com, choose download drivers and put in the service tag. That way it lists the drivers for that laptop.

What does Dell say about the failure using WPA?

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

I did the dell online chat support, and they gave me the wireless team support line (1-800-456-3355 ext.72-46008). I cant call them yet because after my brother tried reinstalling the os and all the drivers, the system no longer recongnizes the wireless card. I uninstalled the card and its drivers and reinstalled them but it still doesnt get recognized as installed on the os.

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

Well, obviously that's the first thing to fix, until you get the drivers correctly installed, we can't do much for the connection issue.

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

That sounds like you have the wrong drivers.

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

Silky, did you ever figure this out? My brand new Dell Inspiron 1520 with XP Pro has the exact same problem. Hours of troubleshooting myself, and then with Dell led nowhere. If I set my AP to open or WEP, it connects fine. Fails everytime with WPA-PSK. It ain't the AP -- I have another dell laptop XPS m1210 next to me with XP Home and it connects fine. My only options are to use WEP, which is kind of useless -- or buy a USB wireless adapter -- which I don't want to do.

Re: Wireless Connection Issue

Silky,
I finally gave up. My guess is these new draft N wireless adapters are very finicky when it comes to WPA and the access point on the other end. ... Or the Windows XP drivers for these adapters suck! My access points are all tried and true, work with EVERYTHING and every OS (win, linux, OSX) -- but they are several years old. I guess I'll have to fork out the $$$$$ for a new AP. I'll make sure to get one of the AP's mentioned in the support docs that were successfully tested with this adapter.
