Home Network Problem with XP
I have a small home network with 4 PC's. 1 Server running XP SP2, 2 laptops running XP SP2 and 1 laptop running 2000 professional. All laptops access the network via a wireless connection. I have been runing this network without isses for a year +. Obviously XP SP2 is relatively new. For some reason 1 of the laptops running XP SP2 can no longer access shared services (folders and printers) on the server. The other 2 laptops have no problems. I can ping the server from the laptop by IP address but not host name. If I try to acess the server via the run command \\ip address works fine but \\host name doesn't. I have removed all firewalls, flushed the dns using the ipconfig command and renamed the HOSTS file. Still have the problem. Any thoughts on where to look next?

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. Network Properties, Advanced, WINS, and check the enable block.

You can try this Reset XP TCP/IP Stack first, if that doesn't do it, try this WINSOCK Fix for XP.
I had SP2 cause some issues on a machine, the stack reset beat it back into submission. ![]()

Open a DOS window and type:
IPCONFIG /ALL >C:RESULT.TXT Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

The only odd thing I see is the DNS addresses normally point to the router, it's curious that they point directly to a DNS server. Does this IPCONFIG output match what you see on other machines?

After reading another similar thread on this web site, I found the problem. It is being caused by the Norton Personal Firwewall software. Didn't even know I had this installed. Once I disabled the firewall I could immediatley see all shares on the server and once again access them via host name.

Firewalls bite more people when they're trying to get networking going, I should put that in my tagline!
