[SOLVED] My Network is a mess...
Here is my current situation... I recently got a PS3, I attempted to hook it up to the internet but failed. It could detect the IP Address but the internet connection always failed. I looked online and found out I needed to add in the information manually. I did that and it still would not work. I would get a message saying there was some things conflicting though (popup on desktop).
![]() After that I messed around with some settings on my router. I reset it a few times, restored to default factory settings, etc. Now, for some reason I can no longer access my router control panel (SMC7004VBR) by entering the IP address into my internet browser (192.168.2.1). To my surprise my internet throughout my entire house is in chaos, my other computer upstairs has no connection and I have made no headway with the PS3... I spent a long time getting the internet on my main computer to work (repairing connecting and a bunch of other nonsense, resetting router etc) and now I can't access my router to fix the issues that are plaguing me now. I have no idea what to do. I consider myself very fluent with computers and am really surprised that I need to come here for help. I am usually a do-it-yourselfer... Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need more information, don't hesitate to ask. Last edited by Sharpz214 : 05-03-2008 at 02:37 PM. |

Re: My Network is a mess...
Sharpz214,
Are you attempting to use a WIRED or WIRELESS connection with your PS3. I can tell you from personal experience that the WIRELESS connection with the PS3 is slow and unreliable. If at ALL possible, I would opt for a WIRED connect between your router and the PS3. You can obtain specific support for your router at: http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=v...%5FUSA&pid=924 - John |

Re: My Network is a mess...
Sharpz214,
Use a STATIC or manual address on your PS3 rather than DHCP. You can configure the DHCP server on your router to start at a higher address range so you can use STATIC addresses on your PS3 and other PCs/devices. The Router's address will be the Default Gateway, the Subnet Mask is generally 255.255.255.0 I would determine the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers and hard code those on your PCs & PS3. Let me know if you need specific instructions for making changes to your router. - John |

I am having problems connecting to my router via web browser. I type in the default IP for my router and get a "This page cannot be displayed..." I then tried typing into the command prompt, ipconfig /all and found the default gateway, it said 72.131.112.1... I tried typing that in and I get the same error. I am not sure how to get into the control panel for it. Also, this might be a bit weird, but when I had no internet on this computer I was able to access the control panel for my router. Then when I finally got the internet working I could no longer access it for the reasons written above. Any idea's on how to get it working? ![]() Thanks again! ![]() |

Re: My Network is a mess...
You are getting a public IP address from the router. That normally means you have connected the broadband modem to one of the LAN/Network ports and not the correct WAN/Internet port on the router.
Turn everything off, modem, router, and the computer(s), and fix that first. Start up the modem, then the router, and finally boot a computer. See if you don't make more progress that way. I'd also like to see that after you do all this. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: My Network is a mess...
Sharpz214,
First, at the risk of being redundant, let me clarify that you've got 2 separate network devices - a ROUTER and a broadband MODEM - right? If this is the case, Johnwill is right. when your internet connection is working, the IP address, gateway, etc on your IPconfig /ALL post tells me that you're plugging your PC directly into the Ethernet port on your broadband MODEM, not the router. When your internet is NOT working, based on the addresses your obtaining, you're PC is plugged into one of the ports on your ROUTER. This might be a simple connection issue (i.e. modem, router and PC(s) are connected together incorrectly). Are there other PC's on your network? If so, are THEY working? Sorry if my questions seem redundant - but based on your last post - something is not connected together correctly. - John |

Re: My Network is a mess...
Sharpz214,
Look at the OTHER piece of hardware - not the SMC router, but the actual modem from your Internet provider. What is the make/model of this device? Who is your Internet Service Provider? Describe the connections, cable types, labels next the the jacks on the back (other than the power adapter cord). Also, look at the sticker (usually has a barcode) on the bottom or back of your SMC 7004VBR router. I need to know the version you own. Possible version numbers are: 750.645 751.0113 751.7922 752.8894 I'm thinking that your problem is that things aren't connected together properly and/or you've reconfigured or factory reset your SMC router such that it's not connecting to the Internet properly. If you're using DSL, then the router needs to have PPPoE configured with a username/password before it can connect to the Internet. If you have Cable, you shouldn't need to configure any authentication or security. Please reply with the make/models of your broadband modem as well as the version of your SMC router. - John |

Re: My Network is a mess...
Sharpz214,
Thanks for the feedback - this really helps. You've got a Scientific Atlanta Cable Modem with USB & Ethernet connectivity as well as VOIP (Voice over IP) adapters to use Time Warner's digital telephone service. Here's a link to the online manual for your cable modem: http://scientificatlanta.com/product...es/4004041.pdf Are you using the USB connection on the back of this device? If so, this might explain all of the confusion. DO NOT use the USB connection on your cable modem. You cable modem should have an ethernet (RJ45) jack on the back (3rd jack from the bottom) via RJ45 patch cable directly to the WAN or Internet connection on your SMC router. From there, your PCs should be connected to one of the 4 free Ethernet ports on your SMC router. Go to: http://www.smc.com/files/AL/MN_7004VBR_MN_E_final.pdf for the manual for your SMC router. This will guide your through setting up your router for your cable broadband modem. Go to Page #22 on the above link and this will walk you through the configuration. If you have any questions - please reply to this thread. - John |

Oh, wow. I am supposed to plug in the ethernet cable coming from my modem into the WAN jack on the back of the router? Mine goes directly into one of the jacks. When I get home I will definately look into those guides, thanks. If I have any questions I will ask! :) |

Re: My Network is a mess...
Yes, my instructions CLEARLY stated you need to use the WAN connection of the router for the modem connection. It doesn't work any other way!
![]() Why is it that I have to say this multiple times, yet someone else tells you and you believe them? ![]()
