IE or Firefox don't find internet

I have AT&T DSL using a motorola modem and a netgear wireless router. XP indicates I have a solid wireless connection at 108 mps but when starting up IE or Firefox neither connects to internet.

IE worked ok then all of a sudden its broke. Tried using the repair routine promt to no avail. I'm stumped so installed Firefox today. Still no connection.

Buy the way... I am typing this on my wifes laptop via the wireless so I know its not on the modem or router end.

Any ideas?

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

tippem,

You problem might be due to an Internet connectivity problem or may be as simple as a DNS problem. To rule out a DNS problem, try the following:

Open up IE, then in the Address bar type:

http://64.233.169.104/

Does this bring up the Google page?

If so, you've got a DNS problem. If not, then you've got an IP connectivity issue.

Let me know.

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

There is no security risk in posting private IP addresses to your post. However, without them, there's not much I can do about figuring out the issue.

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

Well, that can't be right. Your IP address is the same as the Default Gateway, that clearly won't work. Can you post the REAL IP addresses now?

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

Are you connected to the Speedstream modem/router or the Netgear router here?

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

connection to the internet is via the Netgear router which is connected to the speedstream dsl modem. The problem computer contects to the wireless signal via a Netgear Rangemax wireless pci adapter (WPN311) at 108 mps.

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

Well, the connection to the router seems valid.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

tippem,

The results of those test are very telling. I'm thinking you've got firewall software enabled on your PC that's blocking basic IP connectivity. If your wife's PC is connecting to the internet via the same router - it's unlikely that the router is the culprit.

At the risk of being redundant - have you tried a WIRED connection directly from your PC's Ethernet hardware to one of the free ports on the router? Does THIS work? If so, then we're dealing with a wireless issue.

Go To:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103109.asp

Scroll down and right click on the "Right click and Download to Save" button - saving this file on your desktop.

Follow the instructions steps 1 thru 38 on the rest of that page. Be sure to UNINSTALL the old Netgear software/drivers as dictated on this website.

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

Reading through the instructions I would be 1. uninstalling the driver for the PCI adapter, 2. removing the adapter card, 3. re-installing the drivers, a 4. installing the adapter card. Right?

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

also, connecting the destop system to the router via cable is problematic... as PC is about 40 ft from the router with no place to set the PC near the router....which is the reason we have wireless. So I haven't tried a cable connection.

What would cause the connection to work one day on the PC and the next no connetion?

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

You're only connecting with the wire for a test. I doubt $15 will break the bank if you don't want to carry the machine to the router: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/602-8211911-1926230?ASIN=B00009W450&AFID=Froogle&LNM=B00009W450|Steren_50'_Cat_5_Ethernet_Cable_-_308-650GY&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B00009W450&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001

Re: IE or Firefox don't find internet

Next time I am in town I will pick a cable up. Its a ways into town and I probably won't be in until Friday or Saturday. My drive to work each day is about 30 minutes in the opposite direction.

I did the routine with the netgear instructions... mostly. I uninstalled the software, turned off the computer, removed the adapter card, started the computer, re-installed the software, turned off the computer, installed the adapter card, turned the computer on.... and am still waiting for the wizard to fire up asking me to select a country but its still not happening. I rebooted again and still no wizard. What next?
