IE very slow
When launching the IE the lower bar on the windows reads "detecting proxy settings" and it takes 1 min 55 sec to find the home-page, that is way too long for high speed internet service. The boxes on IE tools>internet options>connections>LAN settings>automatic configurations are all unchecked. Any insights on what the problem could be? Once the home page is found the internet browsing seems to work fine but only when doing so within the same window. If another IE window is launched the result is the same, i.e. it takes ages to find the web-page and the same message "detecting proxy settings" on the lower bar.

Re: IE very slow
Open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, and click on the LAN Settings button. Make sure no proxy is enabled. All three boxes should be unchecked for most connections.

Re: IE very slow
That was done before posting the problem. All boxes are unchecked and when launching the IE instead of "detecting proxy settings" now it reads "Finding site: [home-page]" and it takes forever!

Re: IE very slow
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: IE very slow
The connection is wired. Service is High Speed up to 5 Mbps download speed. Modem is a motorola SB5102. I don't think is a connection/network problem. There's no router and only one computer wired. The pinging testing had ok results as far as I could tell. I think there's a problem with the settings within IE. The problem began when doing the Microsoft updates. The OS is 2000Pro. No error messages popped or logged. Firefox seems to work fine.

Re: IE very slow
You can try to Reset IE6 to Default Settings and see if that helps.

Re: IE very slow
Thanx. Default settings were done but it didn't solve the problem. I switched to firefox in the meantime until I eventually find a solution to the very slow IE. Firefox works well and doesn't show a slightest hint of any problem otherwise with IE.

Re: IE very slow
I'd have to believe that you have some malware or other browser helpers in IE that are slowing it down.
