[SOLVED] DHCP server uses 169.254 range but connects to Web!?!
Hi,
I have just been trying to trouble shoot a friends network. AFAIU they have got a router that is set to use DHCP with range in 169.254.x.x I've never really thought what happens in that scenario - they are browsing the web fine but email Outlook and Thunderbird suddenly stopped sending outlook gives the usual 0x800CCC0F and fails to connect, thunderbird not working either so it shouldn't be a broken PST. AV Firewall disabled for test and that does not solve. They can telnet into port fine, . . . They have been using 169.254 range for years with no problem!?! Question1 is anybody have any other trouble shooting tips for outlook Express client? Question 2 is the 169.254 range anything to do with it? Again, it has been working fine up until today. I cannot get remote access so I don't want to change to a 192 range unless absolutely necessary, I will be directing people who know nothing and they have their printer on there, . . . . Thanks in Advance |

Re: DHCP server uses 169.254 range but connects to Web!?!
Changing IP wont do nothing.
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private internets (local networks): 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 Also, IP addresses in the range of 169.254.0.0 -169.254.255.255 IF browser is not working and the mail is not worknig but the PC is getting the DHCP address then first i would ask, have you paid the bill?!? maybe the ISP has disconnected you? If not try to login the router and see if it connects with the internet and has a valid public IP address Also try to use another PC see if surfing is ok or not |

Re: DHCP server uses 169.254 range but connects to Web!?!
Solved - it was a rogue email that somehow messed up Outlook express but curiously didn't mess up Outlook full version.
They had connection to the web it was only email clients that were broken. They are still using the 169.254 range which isn't good IMO. But it is working!?! |
