My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
The wireless internet connects to the wireless network but then disconnects minutes after. My father set up the wireless and it works fine on his laptop with Windows Vista but on mine it doesn't. I have XP SP2. Even when it says it is connected it still says I'm offline on Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. I have Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter and a D-Link router.
Does anyone know how to fix this?? |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise,
The fact that you connect for a period of time without problems, then disconnect leads me to believe that you might have some power-saving feature enabled on your laptop that's powering down your WiFi Adapter after a period of time - leaving it in a disconnected state where you can't access anything. Are you running on battery or AC (power adapter plugged into the laptop and AC power)? Right-click on "My Computer", left click on Properties, click on the "Hardware" tab at the top then click on the "Device Manager" button. From there, locate "Network Adapters" in the list and click the "+" next to "Network Adapters". Locate your WiFi network hardware, right-click on THAT hardware, left-click on "Properties", then look for a "Power Management" tab at the top. If it's there, click on this tab, then uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". If this wasn't checked or checking and rebooting did not solve this problem, go to: http://www.intel.com/support/wireles.../CS-010623.htm From this page, identify and download the Intel wireless software for your specific hardware / version of Windows. This is the chipset version of the drivers NOT the drivers and software which shipped with your PC. Download, install and reboot your system and see if THIS solves your problem (also be sure to check the power settings as described above). Let me know the results. - John |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
Yeah i did all of that. My father has a laptop with Vista which is connected to the wireless network and works fine.
After I had rebooted the computer it connected to the wireless network and then timed out after about 10minutes. When it was connected, the browsers were still saying it was offline. |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise,
You say that you computer disconnects from the WiFi network after about 10 minutes. Was this ALWAYS the case with your computer or is this something that has recently started happening? Are you running your laptop on battery power or AC power (connected to adapter/plug) when this happens? Knowing the difference between battery power and AC power is important in isolating your problem. Where is your laptop physically located in distance compared to you father's laptop which is NOT having trouble? Do you have any cordless/wireless telephones in your house? Do this, when your laptop is successfully connected to your wireless network and working, double-click on the wireless connection icon in your system tray (lower, right-hand corner of your Windows screen). From there, click the "Support" tab at the top, then click the "details: button. Select all of the text in the Details window, press CTRL-C, then past this text in a reply message here. Likewise, when you connection is NOT working, do the same - copy and past those DETAILS here. I'd like to compare the two. I know this is a lot of questions - but it's the only way to figure out what's going wrong with your laptop's WiFi connection. - John |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
Yeah the 10 minutes thing has been the case.. It usually disconnects around that time frame. I run my laptop on AC power all the time.
His laptop is generally bout 10metres away, and yeah we have a few cordless phones in our house. I couldn't find the same information when it was offline. When online: Physical Address: 00-04-23-78-55-C3 IP Address: 192.168.0.114 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Server: WINS Server: |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise,
Do this BOTH while your WiFi network connection is Working, then while it is NOT working: 1) Start, Run, then type netsh diag gui Then click "OK" This will take a few minutes, but when it's done, click on the "Save to File" button. This will save the file to your desktop as "Netdiag xxxxxxxx xxxxxx.htm" When your WiFi network is NOT working, do the exact same steps as above and save to your desktop. Attach BOTH the working and non-working wi-fi netdiag files to your next reply. This will give very specific information about network stettings/conditions both in a working/connected as well as a disconnected environment. - John |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise,
Yes - copy the contents of those screens to Notepad or Word, then select that text, copy it, then paste it onto your reply on this thread. The fact that you're disconnecting from your wireless when plugged into AC power on your PC is of concern. If your Dad's PC is NOT having these problems, then I'm thinking that there's something wrong on your laptop. Again - and I know I've asked you this several times - was this disconnection issue ALWAYS the case on your laptop or is it something that started recently? It might seem like a pointless question, but knowing if it's something new or something you've always dealt with will help in narrowing down the cause(s) of this problem. Having a detailed log of your WiFi IP status details both during a successful connection and a failed disconnection will allow me to better determine exactly what's causing the WiFi disconnect. - John |

Also.. I've discovered, after the wireless had disconnected previously, after the computer had turned on, when i try and connect again and while the "connecting" dialog box is up and fiddle with the firewall settings-regardless of whether i am turning it on or off, it will connect but still the browsers won't say i'm connected to the internet and it still disconnects after about 10minutes. |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise,
I know I've had you download and install the LAN drivers from Intel - but try downloading THESE drivers and install them ALL on your PC: http://www.asi.com.au/support/Driver.../biosIMAGE.exe http://www.asi.com.au/support/Driver...iver/Winxp.zip The first is the Flash BIOS upgrade. The second is the COMPLETE set of XP drivers for your PC. I'm thinking something might be screwed up with the chipset drivers that causing problems with your Intel Wireless PCI Network adapter. - John |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise,
If disconnects are affecting a laptop, check the power management setting for its network adapter. In Windows XP, go to the Device Manager’s Network Adapters area, find your adapter, and select Properties. Under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box that turns off the adapter when power saving kicks in. Your battery may run down a little quicker, but you’ll have a stable network connection. - John |

Re: My wireless wont connect- every time it says its connected it disconnects
daniellaelise
When you download that BIOS - you'll need to insert a blank diskette and the program will exact the BIOS to a bootable diskette. Boot your laptop from that diskette to upgrade the BIOS. http://www.asi.com.au/support/Driver.../biosIMAGE.exe As far as the XP stuff, download, extract and install ALL of those files/programs. Make sure you're running Windows XP SP2. - John |
