router problem: skype works but browser does not

HI all,

I've got an issue here that is driving me crazy...and I was hoping that someone here could help me out.
I have a thompson TW710 cable modem in my appartment and it appears to be working just fine. But... every 30min (not exactly but just frequently) it starts doing weird.

For instance... When I'm using my xbox and im connected via wifi to xbox live and I am in a game.... I can finish the game...but cannot start a new one. At the same time I can not use msn or browser on my laptop anymore...but skype works just fine.
I found a simular question on this forum...but there was no final sollution because the poster stopt replying. All I know is that it probarbly has got something to to with UDP and TCP/I. But I have no idea how to fix it. All we can do now is restart te router over and over...and it aint nice when you are gaming...and someone decides to restart te router ;).

So please help me...what can I do?? I don't necceserily need a perfect solution...as long as it is different from disconnecting the router...I'm happy

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

First off, if you do disconnect the router for a test, does it work properly connected directly to the cable modem? We need to isolate this issue to the router, or some other cause. If it's really the router, try the following fixes.

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  3. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

Hi, thanks for the reply:)

I don't really understand what you mean by 'disconnect for a test' :$

1. I always have the channel 11 selected...but I live in spain... should I then use another?

2. I have tried to find the newest firmware....but I couldn't find any firmware for my TW710 model :(

3. Resetting to factory defeaults is what I did the day before yesterday. Then I had to wait for it to tune and stuff...and at a certain moment...3 lights were flashing...and according to the manual this means that it is downloading it's software. Could it be that it automatically downloads its latest firmware then??

Thnks again for the reply...hopefully you can still help me

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

A little correction: the model is a TWC710 and not TW710. TW is what the manual said...but the modem it self has TWC710 on it. This gave me way more hits when trying to find firmware....but still no succes :(

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

This is a modem/router, right? I find very little information on it. I don't even find a TWC710 listed on the Thompson International site.

Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking and see if it still disconnects.

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

I tried in safe mode...and it still doesnt work :(. It is not that it disconnects....but just after some time... browser and msn dont work anymore. All that works is skype as far as I know.

Yes it is a modem... to be precise... a thomson TCW710 digital broadband cable modem.
I have changed the channel form 11 to 6...but a few min ago, I lost my browser connection again :(

Damn...sorry...I see when I made the correction post earlier...I typed the model wrong again its TCW not TWC

thats the one

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

I'm leaning to your ISP or the modem/router having an issue.

Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

Hi, thnx for still helping me:)

When I go to my router settings I can find this under the network/WAN tab:

WAN IP Address: 213.37.122.245
MAC Address: 00:18:9b97:53
Duration D: 00 H: 02 M: 00 S: 00
Expires Fri May 02 00:30:19 2008
DNS Servers 62.42.230.24
62.42.63.52

WAN Connection Type DHCP
Host Name (Required by some ISPs)
Domain Name (Required by some ISPs)

Spoofed MAC Address 00:00:00:00:00:00

So...as you can see there is no space to fill in a new DNS.
I can however when I change the "wan connection type' to 'static ip'
Then I see this:

WAN Connection Type
IP Address 0.0.0.0
IP Mask 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway 0.0.0.0
Primary DNS 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS 208.67.220.220

Those DNS is what your link told me to enter... but when I click on apply...it gives an error because the gateway, ip and ip mask are invalid. Should I enter 192.168.0.2 ? or?

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

Did you follow the instructions? You should do the configuration on your Windows box, not the router. For the router, you can replace the DNS address with this one, but I recommend just trying it on your computer to see if it has an effect.

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

It didn't help :(. But then again... we have 4 laptops and a xbox 360 here.. I only did the DNS with my laptop... is this a problem? anyways, I was reading...and when a roommate entered my room and said browser wasn't working again...I checked it at my laptop (with the open DNS)... and I also had no browser.

If you think a new router will help.... do you have suggestions? A fair cost/ good quality cable modem...? or just some tips....what should a look for?

Again my gratitude for your help

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

Well, if all of the machines are failing, it's a common component. Router, modem, or the ISP.

Some things you can try here for the modem/router.
  1. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  2. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.
Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

It is possibly a heat issue, try directing a small fan directly on the modem/router and see if that helps.

Re: router problem: skype works but browser does not

I wasn't able to fix the problem :(. But I did notice that in 95% of the moments that the http fails but skype works...is when I am gaming on xbox live. Now I am google-ing around to see what might be the cause...I I can't find anything.
I also couldn't find any firmware updates for the router :( I don't think is is any :(.
Please....can you keep me posted if you find a solution to the problem?
