EEK! Help!

I recently added a second computer to my wireless home network. Pretty new to networking... anyways, I kept getting prompts asking if I wanted to add this computer to my network. I said yes. It then asked if I wanted to use a flash drive to do so... I stuck my flash drive in and after ejecting it, the icon changed for the flash drive. ANYWAYS... so yesterday I was on the original computer(a laptop) and stuck the flash drive in to pull some pics off of it. I was asked if I wanted to add this computer to my network? I clicked yes, and immediately was kicked off line. I tried to connect and once connected, it reads "connected with limited access". I've gone through the control panel a million times and can't find anything that allows me to manage the user access. The other wireless connections are up and running fine. Can anyone help?

Re: Help!

i'm pretty new at this so i'm taking a shot in the dark, but it sounds like, maybe, your flash drive has an autorun program on it to set the network configurations to the new computer you wanted to add on when inserted. as if it's trying to make it as easy as possible for the user by doing all the work for you. if u printed or documented your original network settings u can manually change them back to those original settings. otherwise, u can try re-adding the original computer to the network by changing the problem computer's network settings to default, or completely removing them, and using the procedure u used when adding the new computer for the original computer. next time u use the flash drive to load the network settings, after u've used it on the system u want to set up, when u put it in any of the already operating properly systems and the popup asking if u want to add this computer to the network, click no and delete the info from the flash drive. some things to try. . .. just trying to help

Re: Help!

Thanks for the response! The problem I'm having is knowing where to go in order to make these changes. It's almost like I'm not granted the access to connect to the internet. I've been all through the Networking and Sharing, as well as Manage Wireless Networks.... still stumped!

Any other suggestions?

Re: Help!

When I recently added a new PC to my network, when it asked me for the workgroup name (in about the third step of the wizard) a just typed in the same workgroup name I used for the older PC (I think its MSHOME by default). Do you connect through a gateway or router? Or are you on ye old dial up/modem?

Re: Help!

i know some routers will allow you to access their settings via internet explorer - u use the format http://192.168.1.1 - or whatever the ip address is for your router. . . i think that's the standard address though. . . it may open up your router options and u can manually input and change the settings for mac addresses, dns settings, ip addresses, and dhcp options. . . .try that, it seems like u may have 2 computers with the same addresses, . . . kind of like tryin to get online with the same aol account at the same time, one of them isn't going to work. . . try that. . .hopefully someone more experienced will be more helpful. . .. also, see if u can do a print screen and post it here in a reply to show your settings if u can get to them. . ..

Re: Help!

u can find the ip address of your router and the other info by going into the control panel, network connections, local area connections, then click on support tab at the top of the window. . . it will show u ur address type, ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway(which is your wireless router.) to change these settings try that link i listed above. . . when u do get to them, write everything down, print it, or save it. . . . hopefully this will be helpful, i know ur running vista right now, and i've got xp. . . .good luck

Re: Help!

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
