Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
Hi, I hope you can help me with this.
I'm running XPSP2 with IE7 I had this problem for 2 months when the DSL was first hooked up, and it was found to be something installed incorrectly in the outside wiring. The I was fine for 2 years. In December, it started up again, and neither Verizon, nor Linksys have been able to figure out what's going on. I'll be online just fine, and then I click a link or try to go to another webpage, and I get no response... and then I get the dreaded "Internet Explorer Can Not Display the Web Page". I can be on for 5 minutes, 2 hours, or 3 days. there's no warning. And all the lights on the modem and the router stay on like they're supposed to. Verizon has sent me a new modem twice. And Linksys has sent me two new routers, and still the same thing. I posted this on the Hijackthis Help Forum, thinking I had a virus, in December, but Ried could find nothing wrong. (Actually, I've just posted there again, because now I DO have a virus, but I know that is NOT the cause of THIS issue.) I turn off the router, or the modem and router, or just the modem (the router is not hooked up now), and turn it back on, and I can get back online. And then I'm online again... until it happens again. Which is usually in 10-15 minutes. Probably 30x a day. So frustrating! I discovered this weekend that Firefox still opens and I can get online that way. And today I realized I can still also use Netscape. I don't know why I never tested that before. I just never use either of them and didn't think of it. And any time I called V or L tech support, they never suggested it. At first the Verizon guy (I called today for about the 100th time since December) suggested it could be the ethernet card in the computer, or something wrong with the slot. No one had ever suggested that before. Made sense... Definitely, another new modem was not the answer! But then when I remembered that Firefox worked, we tried that, and it did. So that's when I tried the Netscape and that worked. So it seems the problem is isolated down to Internet Explorer itself! I did download a new copy, but I haven't turned off the computer, or deleted the old copy yet, because I'm in the middle of something I don't want to cut off right now. But as I have been at this with tech people for nearly 5 months already, and no one ever suggested re-installing IE before, that it seems like it can't end up being that easy! So, in the meantime, I was wondering if you had any other suggestions. In case that doesn't fix it. Or even if it appears to. Because I've fallen for that before! When I got the first new router, I stayed online for two weeks, and I thought, for sure, it had to have been the router all along. But no, now 2 months later, Linksys is again replacing the router... I have a VOip phone, and until I got the first new router, the phone would disconnect too, when I lost IE, which is why I was thinking I was truly losing the internet. But when I got the new router, I could still be on the phone, even if IE cut off. But now that Linksys wants to send me another new router, the phone and fax are disconnected altogether. Which is a total bummer. So I'd love this to be sorted out quickly. I might be back to post my results of reinstalling IE before anyone even gets to this. But if one of you get here first, please suggest any other diagnostic you can think of, to pinpoint the cause of this problem. Its drivng me crazy! Thanks SO much! Suraya Rose miracleshaman |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
Dang it!
Its been two hrs since I reinstalled and I already had to power cycle the modem 7 times to regain my connection. I need IE for several programs I use regularly, that won't run without it. I hope you can help me sort this out soon! Five months is enuf! Thanks, Suraya Rose miracleshaman |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
This is the 3rd time I am posting this. I hope this one goes through.
When I click on submit reply, nothing happens. Good ole IE doing its thing! GTP, Thanks for getting back to me! (I likie your avatar) No, its definitely not a router issue. The router is not even hooked up right now. The computer is plugged directly into the modem. That's why the phone and fax are not connected. I have McAfee Virus Scan and Firewall. Always on. And I have Spysweeper, AVG Anti-Spy, SpyBot Search and Destroy, Ad-aware from Lavasoft, and Spyware Doctor from pctools for spyware. Spysweeper is always running with shields on and lets me know if it blocks something. The others I run manually. Though I did recently install an updated version of SpyBot, and apparently, the Teatimer is running too. Which I wish it wouldn't be. Because on boot up it sends up a zillion alerts about changes that I don't know what to do about. I think I had that feature disabled before I updated. But this craziness with IE has been going on since December, so none of the above are to blame. Those have been my services for many, many years. And as I already said above, new modems and/or new routers have not helped. I'm online for 10-15 minutes, and then I'm not. I reset the modem (and/or router if its in the mix) and I'm back on. We thought it was the modem... or the router... but continually replacing them with brand new equipment is not solving the problem. And now I even have installed a brand new version of IE and still the same! I'd so apprecaite your assistance in clearing this up. You would be my hero! Thank you, miracleshaman |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
P. S. For the past 12 hours, no links would work. I could not get any web pages to open. And that was oddly enough, even with Firefox too. and yesterday that worked, even if IE didn't. For 2 days, I could not download any of the fixes recommended to clean my system of virus', though I finally have them now. But even now, the computer took 1/2 hour to boot up (and that was after freezing twice and I had to turn off the power to restart both times) and it took over 15 minutes for MSN to open. But once it did, I could access links via my email that worked, and then the links on the forum worked for me too.

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
Thank you, I will try that. And i'll have to go in through internet options on control panel, because now IE will not open at all. But MSN opens, and everything else seems more stable after runninf the virus fixes.
I will let you know my results. |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
I reset the settings as you suggested. And I was able to get right on IE, no waiting. Amazing! But I was bumped off again, almost immediately. I could reconnect and get back on faster than in months. But the getting bumped off was not fixed by the reset.
The malware removal is going well. so when that's all done, I'll be back here to fully concentrate on the IE connection issue. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks, miracleshaman |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
I reset the settings as I said. But teh next time I opened IE, my home page did not open, not even the MSN page the reset set as default. It was a page to download IE. I found that odd, but I clicked on it anyway, and it went through a long install period. And then when it was done, I could not get on IE or MSN again. So I did the reset again. And now I'm here. Maybe I got some phishing page, and my browser was hijacked to a bogus IE site? Is there such a thing?
What should I do if that page comes up again? I didn't see any way to get out of it, beside clicking to install. Because if I closed the page, that's still what came up as the first page opened. This is taking up way too much of my time. I'm getting exasperated. Please help me sort this out. Suraya |

Hello again miracleshaman,
I can see that you have a thread in the HJT forum: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...ml#post1432919 We will stop help in this thread, as it is important for you to get your system free of viruses first. I will close this thread. If after you have been declared clean by a security analyst, and still have the same problem send me a PM to re-open this thread, and we will continue trying to fix the problem here. Thanks Thread closed. |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE
Yes, I do believe Networks is the place to be! There's a thread called *Extreme frequent disconnects* being addressed by johnwill and it is my situation exactly. Doing ping tests and counting hops, and checking out the ipconfig...
I was optimistic that upgrading my ethernet card would be the end of it, but no, no such luck. So yes, please transfer me over to Networks. Hopefully they can help! (Or should I just start a new thread over there?) I'd like to get on this ASAP! Thanks, Suraya |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
So hi to Networks!
Jeez! I hope you can help! Its been 5 months now, that I keep losing my connection. I power cycle the modem or router and I'm back on. For who knows how long. Nobody has been able to figure it out. I am totally clean and malware-free. I've reset IE, I updated my ethernet card. And my system is faster... but I still lose my connection. While waiting for the thread to get transferred over here, I read "Extreme frequent disconnects" thread and did the tests you suggested there. It took 19 hops to get to Google in Wash D.C. and it took 457 seconds, and there was little to no packet loss. I went to the DSL testing site and ran the tweaker test, and everything eas found to be good, and no suggestions were made for tweaking. And the speed test came back 6M down and 768k up. Double the download time Verizon guarantees (a clean system is a big help for that!) and upload is right on. They've tested the line I don't know how many times, and they just give up and send me a new modem. Same with Linksys. A new router is on the way. So obviously it is not the hardware, per se. Something in settings? Or in the wiring itself? I don't know, but it is driving me crazy! It makes me so MAD! Every frakkin' 5 minutes! Though now with all the other fixes, it is lasting longer, before it happens. But it is still doing it. It is beyond annoying. It is the biggest time waster of anything I have ever come across! And i am ready for it to be fixed! I await your reply. Thank you in advance for helping me to clear this up!!!!! Suraya Last edited by miracleshaman; 04-21-2008 at 11:09 AM. Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
Maybe there was a decimal point in that number of 457 seconds that I didn't see. Because that can't be right. Hopefully, you can decipher it anyway.
Please help soon! Suraya |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
One more thing to add...
The first sign I have that my connection is lost, even before the page finishes loading and I get the dreaded Internet Explorer Can Not display the Web Page is that I see this message at the bottom left of the screes, where it shows what web address you're connecting to. It says: res://ieframe.dll/dnsererrordiagoff.htm I take that to mean I'm bumped off, but in case that's a clue to you, I thought I'd post it here. Patiently waiting a response. Thank you, Suraya |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
Have you tried connecting directly to the modem with a wired connection and seeing if the issue is still there?

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
Yes, that's how I'm doing it now. The router is out of the mix altogether. Computer plugged in directly to the modem. Problem definitely still there!
And its a brand new modem. #2! and the second new router is on its way too. That's the only thing Verizon or Linksys can figure out to do, is replace the hardware. And that ain't it! That's the problem! It seems like no matter what configuration it is, completely free of malware, new install of IE, I still lose my connection. I power cycle the modem and then I'm back on. But for how long? Another 5-15 minutes. It was like this the first 2 months I switched from DSL through a phone line, to "dry loop" DSL, and it turned out to be something in the outside wiring, that the guy hooked up wrong. Then it was absolutely perfect for 2 years. The since December, whether with the modem only, or the router and modem, whether I power cycle one or both of them, or reboot completely, I'm back on... until I'm not. I have a Westell 6100, firmware up-to-date. The router I had (and will have again, when the new replacement arrives) was a WRT54G version 8 with the most recent firmware. Its something else... that nobody has been able to figure out yet. I certainly hope you can! Suraya Last edited by miracleshaman; 04-23-2008 at 04:06 PM. |

Re: Connection Problems: I keep getting bumped off of IE [Moved from IE]
Well, if you connect the router back into the picture, will the connection come back if you ONLY power cycle the modem? If so, you may have interior wiring issues for the DSL line.
Here's what I do for DSL wiring. Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand. This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues. Here's a good detailed description of the process: DSL Wiring Upgrade Tutorial
