Basic Connection Between XP and a Vista Laptop

Hello

I just want to know how to connect Windows XP sp2 and a Vista laptop as simply as possible using a cable. Nothing fancy, no wireless at this point.

Just basic connectivity so I can access files.

Thank you very much.

Richard

Re: Basic Connection Between XP and a Vista Laptop

Thanks Johnwill

Actually I am somewhat familiar with TCP/IP. I was using Windows 98 desktop and laptop for years and years and suddenly now I am on XP with Vista laptop practically overnight.

I'm just barely figuring out what is the same as 98 and what is not. For starters...

What kind of cable do I use??? There is no place on the XP to connect the multi pin (serial?) type cable I used to use. I do have USB ports and firewire available.

The Vista laptop has USB and two multi wire ports of some kind.

I am clueless about what cable to use.

Also, there was a little connection program, which I forget the name of off hand, which would connect the two. One would "listen" and the other would connect. Do XP and Vista have any such thing?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Basic Connection Between XP and a Vista Laptop

Two choices : a switch with ethernet cables to each computer, or use a crossover-usb cable between the two computers.
That will create a network.

Well, there is some configuration required to get the network running as well.
