Internet Connects but no Websites
Hi all,
I have a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop that I have not been using for a while until recently (a few days ago) I finally started it up again. It runs XP Home with SP2 and I use an SMC EZ Connect G Wireless Cardbus Adapter. I get the connection and the signal is very good, but IE shows the "cannot display page" message. I have tried netsh winsock reset catalog many time along with ipconfig/flushdns. Nothing has worked. Anyone have any ideas? |

Re: Internet Connects but no Websites
Go to your start menu > run > type cmd > type ipconfig /all.
Take the default gateway that it lists and paste it into internet explorer address bar. This should load your wireless router's configuration page (you may have to login). In this configuration page you should be able to see if your wireless router is getting an IP address from your ISP. One other quick question, are you able to ping websites? (from command prompt type ping www.google.com)

Re: Internet Connects but no Websites
Were you able to get there? what happened? are you able to ping websites? can you ping straight to the IP address of a webserver (ex. ping 64.233.169.104)?

Re: Internet Connects but no Websites
What is your local IP address, specifically does it start with 169.254.xxx.xxx? If you are in fact connected to the router, it should apply a local IP address through a built in DHCP server. If you are recieving the IP address, then I would check for a firewall that could be blocking traffic.
If you haven't already, you might consider resetting your modem, router, and pc. After powering them all off, power on the modem first, wait a couple minutes, then power on the router, wait a couple more minutes, then power on the PC (this works for wired routers, but it could have a similar affect on a wireless one). Wireless networking is a bit of a weakspot for me, I will see if I can get Johnwill over here as he is pretty much amazing when it comes to network connections.

Re: Internet Connects but no Websites
The local IP does start with 169.254, and yes I have tried rebooting them in that order as told multiple times and my firewall has been off for a few days.

Re: Internet Connects but no Websites
Ok, well it appears as though you are not actually connected to your wireless router. An IP address of 169.254.xxx.xxx signifies that Windows XP is automatically assigning you an IP address, it is not a valid address though (click for more info).
As I said in my previous post, I have sent John a message and he hopefully will stop by with more assistance.

Re: Internet Connects but no Websites
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
