Wireless + Crossover + XP + Linux

Hey, guys. I've got a fun little problem. I've got an 802.11n router in my house (which emits 802.11g as well), and my XP desktop has the only capability for it. My Ubuntu laptop can only do b or g wireless, unless I buy a new internal antenna (I've already got the card). The wireless network between the laptop and the computer is too slow to transfer files quickly back and forth between the two, which is what I want.
I have gigabit ethernet on both desktop and laptop, and have gotten a crossover cable to connect the two together (by setting subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and ip addresses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2). However, that means that I can't connect to the internet on my laptop, but I can on the desktop since XP is okay with two network connections and Ubuntu is apparently not.

So, I've got two questions.
1. How can I combine the wireless and gigabit ethernet connections on the desktop, which connects to the 802.11n network? If I try to bridge them, for some reason the internet cuts out on it.
2. How can I make Ubuntu be happy connecting to the 802.11g network as well as the mini-ethernet network?

Your help is appreciated.

Re: Wireless + Crossover + XP + Linux

I fixed the problem somehow by enabling and disabling the devices in some kind of order. So, if anyone else has this problem, just, uh, go crazy.
