Wireless Won't Stay Connected

My computer is not staying connected to the internet. When it does connect

it says "Not Connected" and when its not connected it says "Automatic" in the

"Wireless Network Connection" dialog box which at the bottom right part of my

screen.

I got home a couple of days ago and found my internet to not be connected, so

i tried to connect it and it wouldn't work. It said that I needed to enter a

Network Key. I then checked on my dad's computer and i could not log into

the router (by using 192.168.1.1 in firefox) because it wasn't the correct

Username/Password combination (although no one had changed it and had always

been admin as the password with no username). However, while doing this it

said connecting to WRT54GS (which is the model no. on the router as i later

found out) I put that in as the network key but to no avail, it still wasn't

working. I then asked my dad about it and he didn't know, we tried to renew

myself but it wouldn't work (not totally sure what this was, but we did it

through the Wireless Network Connection thing. We also went into ipconfig

and my settings were weird, instead of 192.168 etc it was some other numbers

like 196.etc... which no one had changed. We then used the command prompt

and tried to /release (which worked) and then /renew (which i don't think

worked). We then set my IP address and DNS information and rebooted my

computer.

The information we put in had worked properly, and I could connect for a

while, but then after 5-10 minutes, it would disconnect me. This has been

persistant, even with rebooting. Also, my firefox locks up or gets VERY slow

and is not responding right after i connect to the network, so I normally

have to reload anything i'm looking at, and then let it disconnect before I

can actually look at it and go to any links which I will then have to refresh

again later. Firefox is also using A LOT of memory (over 400,000k... which

it normally doesn't do, especially with only a few tabs open.

I wrote the first part a while ago, and since then, I closed firefox and

reopened it and it was fine, although I don't know why.

Also, i have tried changing my wireless network card with another one that we

had spare, (both are identical) and i thought it helped at first (said that

the internet was connected, which it normally doesn't), but after 10 or so

minutes I said something about it to a friend on MSN and it disconnected

(jinxed it...).

Now, I am going to clean my computer up, but thought I'd post this first to

see if I could get any help. My dad apparently is also having some sort of

troubles, but they may just be computer problems (he found a few trojans) and

not associated with the connection (he is right by the router and uses a

network cable to connect). My dad was playing "Diablo 2" and he has been

getting "Connection Interrupted" messages along with other error messages

that I guess closed him out of the program.

Wireless Network Card - Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHZ 802.11G
Router - Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router (same stats as above) Model No.

WRT54GS v.4

Re: Wireless Won't Stay Connected

Try this:
- Update the firmware
- Reconfigure the router and make it secured (WEP or WPA mode)

Re: Wireless Won't Stay Connected

If you can't log on into your router try resetting it to factory defaults(Its usually for most routers to have it on the back.) I don't know a lot about networking so I can't help you with the other part. sorry :(
