[SOLVED] IP vs Server Name
I am having a bit of an issues adding a workstation to an existing network.
Only one server 2003 Business Server Using Roaming Profiles Server is DHCP Server Server is a domain controler Some workstations are Vista some are XP Upgraded a workstation from XP home to XP professional so it could attach to the domain. Ran in to a little problem, which I am worried may lead to even bigger problems. Workstations that are already attached can access the server by going \\server OR 192.168.1.100. However, if you navagate to it through network places, you can not see the Server. You can see all of the other computers in the network. This new workstation can only access the server by going 192.168.1.100. It can not find the server using \\server. This causes issues with the roaming profiles. |

Re: IP vs Server Name
On the server and the new PC in question, please do this.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following two commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: IP vs Server Name
Some problems can't always be resolved from a remote location.

Re: IP vs Server Name
Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

Re: IP vs Server Name
Well, that's odd to say the least!
I see one difference, and maybe it's the reason this is happening. Note that the DNS Suffix Search List is different for that machine than the server or the working machine. See if this page helps you sort that out: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275553

Re: IP vs Server Name
Well, that's the extreme solution, but at least it's fixed.
