Wireless Network Problem

Hi
Just purchased an ADVENT 9617 notebook (on Vista) from Curry's and having problems with networking via wireless.
We are already running a home wireless and LAN network using MSHOME and have no problems connecting the ADVENT via ethernet cable to all other pc's (on XP) and the internet.

When unplugged from ethernet cable the ADVENT connects to a wireless network but will not see or be seen by the other PC's.
We have exhausted all the obvious troubleshooting and need help!

Re: Wireless Network Problem

Hi Jacqui,
So let me just refresh and double check to make sure I am understanding your problem. Your notebook (vista) can connect to the network, and access online just fine correct, but when looking at the network you are not able to view the other devices on the network correct?

I as well had a vista laptop and having similar to the same problem, and tried and tried to change it so that I could see the other devices on the network. First thing I want to make sure is that A) Your Wireless Card drivers and software for the Wireless Card are up to date. B) If that is up to date, make sure that your bios is up to date as well, I was on the phone with Customer Support from HP, for over an hour and come to find out that the chipset and bios needed to be upgraded in order to allow the network sharing to see the other devices. C) If all these are updated and still having trouble you can go to the run screen and type in MSCONFIG and bring up the settings for vista and turn off some of the network security, as it could be presenting problems viewing devices.

If all this has failed and you really need to access files from other comptuers you can always go to the RUN utility and connect to the pc manually by entering in the following command.... //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the computer you are trying to connect to.

Re: Wireless Network Problem

Hi
Many thanks for your reply ........
The problem is not apparent when we connect via ETHERNET cable only when I try to connect to the network via the wireless card. So I will now try the msconfig approach to see if that helps!

The wireless is showing 'connected' but we are unable to access the network or internet via the ZyXel 660 router.
Any help is very much appreciated
cheers

Re: Wireless Network Problem

When connected wirelessly, can you access the Internet?

Let's see this with the wireless connection in use.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Wireless Network Problem

It's NBTSTAT -n, you left off the -n. That machine is connected with a wired connection, however it has no wireless connection.

Do you see wireless networks when you search? Are you sure you are connecting to yours? Did you try disabling encryption totally and see if it connects? What encryption are you trying to use, WEP, WPA, or WPA2?
