Hi..
I recently purchased a DELL laptop & have been unable to connect to the Internet for a while now. I have a Huawei DSL modem connected to a Linksys wireless router. I am able to connect to the internet using my other laptops. There is no problem with the internet connection. Every time I try connecting to Internet, it says Limited or no connectivity & the IP assigned is some junk address randomly assigned by Winxp. My router is DHCP enabled. Not able to connect even though I assign the IP, Gateway & DNS and Not able to configure this laptop to access internet. My wireless router has TKIP (WPA-PSK) encryption enabled. Pls suggest any suitable option to get connected to the internet. Thanks !! |

Re: Unable to connect to internet - wireless
Start by disabling ALL encryption and other security stuff like MAC filters on the router. Get it connecting that way, then add them back in.

Re: Unable to connect to internet - wireless
You need to make sure that your laptop wireless device is set up with the same "key" as your router. There should be a way to get into the wireless device. For example, on my husband's computer, I installed a wireless device that fits into the motherboard. On your lap top, this is usually built in. On my Sony VAIO, there is a little sliding switch on the front that allows me to turn it on or off. Make sure your wireless device on the lap top is on. Whether or not it is a user installed device or built in, there should be a way of getting into it and setting it up so it has the same key and other security items that allow you to get into the router.

Re: Unable to connect to internet - wireless
Thanks for your reply Carol. I have the wireless sliding switch ON & the WPA-PSK (TKIP encryption) password is correct as I use the same details to connect my office laptop to the wireless router @ home. This is my personal laptop (DELL Vostro 1500) which is not getting connected.
The laptop gets a default IP 169.254.xxx.xxx which is probably assigned by the OS (Winxp-HOME). However even ping google.com, ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew DO NOT work. IF I give the IP, Gateway & DNS manually,it says connected but I am unable to connect to internet or even ping internet sites. Wireless is enabled in CMOS-BIOS setup, Radio button / Sliding switch as well as using the DELL Utility called Quickset. Any suggestions ?? |

Re: Unable to connect to internet - wireless
Well, the advice for an updated driver is a good one. Also, check in the power settings in Device Manager for that adapter to see if it's allowed to power down to save power.

Re: Unable to connect to internet - wireless
Hi, I seem to face a similar problem but the solution below did not fix it.
This laptop was connecting well to the internet till I took it over to a relative's place and used it on their network. But right now, it shows that it is connected to my home network but for some reason, I am unable to make it work on both Firefox and IE. Thanks for your time! Quote:
