hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

I have a second computer that I want to get connected to the interent. It has an ethernet cable connecting it to the box provided by our server (at&t). The box hooks up to the computer that I am on and gets interent connection, but for some reason, the other computer does not connect to the internet. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

Can you type "ipconfig /all" on both machines, and post the results here. Please indicate which machine works and which doesn't.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

i am not a fan of AT&T. we had their internet for a very brief term.

we had the exact same problem. we could connect to one computer directly connected to the modem. but if you went through any kind of router, you would lose connection on one of the computers.

We had atleast 5 different guys from AT&T come out and none of them could fix the problem.

went to COX cable and all computers worked on start up. same router same everything. didn't change a thing in settings.

hope you can get yours to work, sadly I never could.

The weird thing is that both our computers are connected to the same box (modem?) but one does not get interent. It has a cable labled ethernet going from the box to the computer, but i cannot get interent for some reason.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

are you sure that it's labelled ethernet and should go to the computer ?? maybe it's an uplink and requires a crossover cable ?? check the user manual to ensure that you are correct in your way of thinking.

I also have a small router supplied by my ISP, it has ONE RJ45, ONE USB and ONE RJ11.

The RJ11 is for ADSL
THE USB is for ethernet and requires drivers to allow my 2nd PC to use it.
The RJ45 is for ethernet and requires that I install the correct configuration to my NIC.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

I am sure, there is a big label attatched that says etherenet, and the AT&T guy plugged it into our computer when he installed the modem.

There is an Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection with a red X over the symbol.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

Can you post a screen shot of that?

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Well that's not what you described but it dopes show that your hardware is considered to be problematic. Have you tried to re-install the driver ??

do you get a response when you "ping 127.0.0.1 " from the command prompt ?

You have no network hardware that's recognized by Windows.

Re: hooking a 2nd pc up to the internet

try downloading and installing the latest driver for your network adapter .. I've also had a few problems with the same type but got it working after a few tries. I think tthat there might be a couple of different drivers for teh same device depending upon whether it's on-board (integrated) or a plug-in pci card
