cannot transfer back my files when I transfered my files to laptop

Good day to all
I created a connection between 2 computers one desk top and the other one is laptop. I dont have a router and a switch I created a connection using only a utp cable between 2 computers.
I backed up my files by transferring the contents of my desktop hardrive to a laptop. then I reformatted my desktop to install a fresh copy of windows xp. the laptop also is an xp computer. when I tried to transfer back the files from the laptop the newly installed desktop computer seemed not to saved those files.. what seems to be the problem???

I have no idea. Since I have no idea how you backed up. or what you see on the laptop, it's pretty hard to even hazard a guess.

I can't believe you didn't verify the files were there before formatting the desktop!

Ok, not that we're sure that they're on the laptop, what EXACTLY happens when you try to copy them back? Be specific and screen shots of any error would help.
