Xp Corrupting Belkin N1 USB Adaptor

Hi everybody. We have 3 computers in our house - two laptops and one Desktop. The desktop is upstairs and connects wirelessly using a Belkin N1 USB adaptor to the Belkin N1 router. Here is the issue -

The pair worked perfectly for about a year. then, whether coincidence or not, we switched from SBC DSl to Comcast Cable internet service. Ever since then the Desktop doesn't work. Sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn't. When it does, it allows about 60 seconds of surfing and freezes up and we get the "cannot open page window".

I've spent hours and hours on the phone with Belkin. We disbaled every possible firewall (their first belief), then after several other things took the USB to one of the laptops and found it did not work on it either so belkin replaced it.

But, the same thing has happened with the new one.

Now I am not a techie, but I have to wonder if their could be something in the desktop (no known viruses since I do have McAfee installed) that is corrupting the USB adaptor. Also, while Belkin says it is not a factor, could the change to Comcast be an issue? (note - the two laptops work fine)

Did you try changing the channel on the router? If so...

Try this.

Download and install the latest firmware for the router (if it's not already up to date).
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

One or both of these two many times will cure random issues with a router.

Thanks for these ideas. I tried all of these with Belkin and on my own. Since our two laptops work perfectly, Belkin (and I) have not focused on the router as the problem.

You have a lot of unknown browser helper objects loaded.

Try running IE7 with the following command.

Windows logo key + R then run: iexplore.exe –extoff

See if that changes the behavior.

I get an error message saying that then file couldn't be found. I went into programs and noticed that iexplore does not have an extension.

I am in the process of uninstalling it and will reinstall from a jump drive.

I will let you know after that.

I did check propeorties and that is where I noticed that the file did not have a .exe after it.

I'd like to see a properties screen shot.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. OK, I will do this. I do have an interesting update though. We bought a new laptop for my wife yesterday and that meant moving this desktop to the basement family room for our kids. Since the desk area is right underneath my office where the N1 router is, I thought I would try re-installing my old Linksys WMP54GS PCI g wireless card. (the whole reason why we got the Belkin N1 adaptor was because the Linksys card would get a strong enough signal from the upstairs corner of the house).

Anyway, it installed fine and immediately made a connection to the N1 router in the room above it.

So that tells me even more that the problem is with this USB adaptor and it possible getting corrupted by the dektop.

I did disable a bunch of the add-ons as you suggested.

So, any thoughts on how to test/repair this $100 USB adaptor?
