[SOLVED] Modem -> Hub -> Computer + Acces Point -> Computer

Yeah, I'm, like, completely new to networking. I managed to get a wireless network working earlier, but that's just about all experience I have with networks ^_^

The problem is this: I have cable internet, and two computers that need to be connected to the internet. Unfortunately, the modem only has one port to connect a computer to.

I used to have a modem with 4..how do you call that, sockets or something? Anyways, the thing you can plug a network cable into. I had one directly from modem -> PC, and one from modem -> Access Point -> PC (using some USB wireless connector).

However, my current modem only has 1. So I tried the following:
A network cable goes from the modem to a hub, port 1.
Another network cable goes from the hub, port 2, to PC A.
Another network cable goes from the hub, port 3, to the Access Point.
PC B has a wireless USB thing that allows it to connect to the Access Point (specifics don't matter - it seems to connect to the AP perfectly).

On the hub, port 1 shows NO activity. Port 2 and 3 show regular activity.
On computer A, it fails to connect to the network; says it isn't assigned a network address by the network. No internet.
On computer B, it shows perfect connection the Access Point. However, it does not see computer A in the network, and it has no internet.

I'm using Windows XP on both computers. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Modem -> Hub -> Computer + Acces Point -> Computer

Someone told me the problem was probably the connection between the modem and the hub, suggesting there was probably something wrong with the hub. I tried using one of the two working ports for the modem connection, but still, no activity. I also tried with a different cable, but that wasn't the problem either; still no activity.

Re: Modem -> Hub -> Computer + Acces Point -> Computer

When you say "hub" do you mean "router"? The difference between these two devices makes all the difference. Posting make & model information of all devices will be helpful.

It's possible that you don't have the proper hardware.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Also, please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I don't know very much about networking, so I'm not sure what you're asking for exactly, but...
Modem:
Arris TM502B/220 (Also says 'Touchstone Telephony Modem' on the front of the modem.)
Hub:
SOHOCON FHU-2108TX (also says 'Level One' with their logo, and '8 port 100mbps fast ethernet hub')

Modem -> Hub = Wired

WEP.

Not sure. Dxdiag says 'Unknow'.

In the status window of the connection, second tab, it says it doesn't have access to all resources (e.g. internet) because the network hasn't assigned an IP to this computer. (Sorry, can't get more specific, but I doubt that would help, since the text is Dutch.)

Re: Modem -> Hub -> Computer + Acces Point -> Computer

I am disappointed in tech support people.
I tried posting on this forum and talking to someone on MSN. Both let me get all technical and stuff, but a phone call of less than three minutes was enough to point out that the problem was simply that I need a router, not a regular hub, which is what I was suspecting even before getting the hub, but just couldn't know for sure because I know almost nothing about networking.

Still, thanks for trying...but it's just so odd that the problem was so simple and you people couldn't solve it :(

Re: [SOLVED] Modem -> Hub -> Computer + Acces Point -> Computer

Had I been here yesterday, I would have told you the same thing. Without the model numbers, I didn't know what you had, which is why I asked for them.

I can assure you that while we don't know everything, that one was within our grasp.
