Multi-point connection issue, one computer
Details:
Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop Comcast High-Speed Internet XP SP 2 (upgraded online from SP 1) Modem: Scientific Atlanta WebSTAR 2000 Series Cable Modem (also functions as a broadband phone modem). Wireless Router: Netgear Range Max, WPN824 v2 PCI Wireless Card: Linksys Wireless G Notebook Adapter IP Address: 98.193.253.146 Another "IP Address" listed, says "?" Default Gateway: 98.193.253.1 Ping Address: could not find host Problem: I was initially able to hook up directly to ethernet port (at a different household, ethernet cable running from a Linksys Wireless router's Port 1). I got my own Comcast account, the tech plugged in modem and loaded setup and driver from cd-roms. He had trouble keeping an ethernet connection. After he left, I lost ethernet connection and went to USB hookup, which has been doing well. I'm showing two LAN connections, one using the cable modem, the other showing the Broadcom Integrated Controller (a stock network adapter from Dell I believe?), and the Wireless G Note Book Adapter wireless connection. Both the wireless connection and Broadcom-affiliated LAN connection state "Limited or no connectivity" and "Network did not assign a network address to computer." A glance at the Device List will show all adapters, with red x's depending on which has been disabled at a given time. "Properties" for the Broadcom through Device Manager shows it to be functioning properly, yet the Broadcom Diagnostics says there is no driver for it (it has been downloaded properly). An IE connectivity diagnostic check warned of a problem because of two ethernet adapters. Where to start, please? Thanks, Mike |

Re: Multi-point connection issue, one computer
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc
Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed? Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed? I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Multi-point connection issue, one computer
Attempts at using the cat5 port have resulted in "Network did not assign network address to computer" and "Limited or no connectivity." I did try to manually type those values in under Properties of the connection to no avail. I also have tried bridging connections, thinking this might help, but it hasn't. On a possibly related note, I have trouble connecting wirelessly at wi-fi spots. It will initially make an internet connection, then I'm bumped off, getting a message saying my computer is not able to connect with non-encryption setups.

Re: Multi-point connection issue, one computer
First off, you MUST disconnect the USB to use the Ethernet. Second, you MUST power cycle the modem to release the USB connection and allow the Ethernet to function.

Re: Multi-point connection issue, one computer
Try these simple tests.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Multi-point connection issue, one computer
Before posting your previous request, I'd better put a little info down in the event I cut myself off from the net by my tinkering (which is what has been the case for the past day). I went ahead and did a repair/freshening Xp install, hoping this might bring some order to the computer's default networking status. It did show some progress; now I have massive amounts of packets) flowing back and forth on cat5 (sometimes tilted towards more received than sent; weird), and bumped my USB hookup (just resolved). I'm no longer receiving "limited connectivity" or "network did not assign..." warnings on cat5. What I'm getting now is "IP address couldn't be renewed" when I attempt to repair connection. Anywho...

Re: Multi-point connection issue, one computer
I'm wondering: does Comcast assign only one ip address per account? And, can there be a conflict in trying to use different connection setups (one for usb, one for cat5) for this one address, if there is only one given ip address? As stated before, I initially had a great cat5 connection just running my computer off someone's Comcast account (cat5 to their router). Is it possible the problem resides in having connected in that way?
